Antiaging

The use of antiaging skin care products has grown enormously over the last two decades; the growth in popularity is due in no small part to the fact that we are all living and working longer. This is achieved in beauty products by promoting the growth of connective tissue using the protein collagen which is the most abundant in the skin of all animals; twenty-five per cent of the skin's protein is collagen. Collagen is related to other anti-aging substances found in the body and other substances; we call them antioxidants, they aid the repair of cell damage associated with cell damage.

Vitamin C is probably one of the better known anti-oxidants in use today but the debate about the daily quota required is ongoing. Skin care treatments that are based on vitamin C, pose the problem of becoming oxidized themselves as they come into contact with air during their usage.

Other skin care treatments which mimic the effects of vitamin C are being tried all the time which are hoped to be more stable in the atmosphere and also cheaper to produce. However, these anti-ageing skin care treatments are not as effective vitamin C based products, although vitamin E and lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants and have similar effects.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and component of human blood whose purpose is to help increase the body's immune system; it helps build resistance against infection like cancer for example. Another of these is lipoic acid which is found in every cell of our body to help generate energy for us to live; it is also known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by repairing skin damage caused by the aging process.

The use of plants has not been overlooked either with many types able to provide essences called phytochemicals which have proved successful in antiaging skin care products. A secondary but more important use of phytochemicals is the effect they have on the prevention of some strains of cancer; for example:

  • Prostate Cancer in Men
  • Breast Cancer
  • Colon Cancer

These types of cancer are also becoming some of the most prevalent worldwide.

For some time now it has also been known that the vitamins B5, B6 and B12 also have antiaging skin care properties. This is a vast area that has the potential for many new antiaging skin care products and services in the future but research needs to continue. A great deal about the aging process has already been learned and the products available today are already far more advanced than ten years ago; there is still a long way to go however, before methods that successfully reduce the effects of age are commonplace.

There may be many challenges still to overcome but in time scientists believe they will succeed in producing more effective anti-aging skin care products that are less expensive and available to more people. It may be time to learn that not every synthetic antiaging product is going to work; fortunately there is a number of natural anti aging regimes that can be carried out that do not rely on science. You know all these things but how many do you practice? Regular exercise, restful sleep, drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy diet and keeping your stress levels low are all necessary.
