If you are familiar with some of my other articles, you'll know that I write often in regard to anxiety and depression. I mention often in articles, that I believe antidepressant medications, the most commonly prescribed ones being the "SSRI" types, have their place in treating these disorders. I am not, nor ever have been against antidepressants in their proper place. I am however against the prescribing abuse of them that does take place and that sometimes takes the place of proper testing and diagnosis of physical, medical illnesses, in need of treatment. I know this type prescribing abuse takes place because I have witnessed it firsthand and in posting on health forums, nearly 4,000 times, over a several year period, I've heard the testimonies of people this has happened to. They were given a snap-diagnosis of emotional disorder and prescribed antidepressants, only to find out later that they were severely diabetic or were suffering overt, full-blown hypothyroidism. Certainly there are wonderful Doctors out there who do not resort to antidepressants for time-saving or as cure-all drugs but there are those out there who do and these types of Doctors have been featured in national news coverage for this very thing. While I would never want to discourage proper use of these drugs, I do believe it is simply wise to watch for signs of this type behavior in Doctors you place your health in the hands of, who resort to a quick-fix and are not taking time to thoroughly evaluate the status of your health. These audios below, are hopefully balanced in bringing this message, in regard to subject of SSRI antidepressants.
Do some Doctors jump to the "emotional diagnosis", a little too quickly and prescribe antidepressants before ruling out underlying diseases? Many diseases and health disorders can potentially cause emotional symptoms and Doctors should be listening more to their patients and taking more time with them. Antidepressants have a proper place but should not be used as cure-all drugs to replace proper diagnosis.
