Remember when toys didn't need batteries? Well, I'm not sure batteries had even been invented when the antique toys pictured on these vintage Christmas cards were painted. Pull toys were popular then, along with rocking horses, sleds, wooden soldiers, puppets, tops, rubber balls and a large assortment of dolls. You can see them all and more in these vintage cards, each of which provides a trip down Christmas memory lane.

At least one of these cards was painted by Ellen Clapsaddle, the most prolific vintage greeting card artist of all time. Several were painted by Frances Brundage, whose collection of greeting card paintings came in a close second to Ellen's in terms of numbers. Although their paintings were relegated to the realm of "ephemera" (something ephemeral or with a fleeting life), they were no less talented than many painters with more traditional works, such as Norman Rockwell. I hope you enjoy not only using these vintage Christmas greeting cards to make your own handmade cards, scrapbooks or craft projects, but that you also take a moment to appreciate the work of these two supremely talented women.

Yes, I can remember toys without batteries and it was not that long ago. Batteries, another way to commercialize for profit. If everyone goes through them like we do! Great article and a delightful read…Loved the vintage cards—so nostalgic…

Thanks, Nancy.

An even worse development in the toy world is that virtually every commercially-made toy HAS to make noise. That drives me nuts!
