We've all done it...walked out the front door and realized a split second too late that it was locked with our keys still inside. But add in a smoking oven and your temperature is going to begin to rise.

First you run through the easy options. Roommate...in class.

On-site manager...not home. You start to get a little worried.

Window? The screen comes off easily enough but the only window that is open happens to be 25 feet off the ground. And lo and behold...your window locks actually do work...lucky you.

Next step...call someone stronger than you. The smoke alarm's shrill ring shatters the mid-morning silence. Still no luck with the windows.

Call a locksmith...an hour wait time isn't going to do you much good.

Through the window smoke is filling the living room. The alarm keeps ringing.

Finally...you reach the property owners office secretary. Extra keys? Let me get back to you.

It's an emergency you reply...my apartment is going to burn down!

You consider waiting for a key but smoke-filled rooms of charred furniture enter your head and you opt for breaking in the front door.

One. Two. Three counts later and the smoke rushes out as you rush in, flipping the oven to off and removing the blackened remanance of your lunch.

Silence returns as you grasp the batteries from the smoke alarm, coughing your way back to the door to observe the damage.

The loss of a security deposit now looming at the forefront of your mind but the realization that your apartment is still standing bringing a relieved smile to your face.

You'll laugh about it in the morning and probably never lock yourself out again (at least not with the oven on.)
