Belly dancing or Arabic dancing as it should be known is a rich, vibrant form of dance. Arabic dancing has many benefits, both mental and physical. It is an exotic dance that promotes fun, confidence and strength.

This ancient form of dance has been around for thousands of years and is spreading throughout the Western world. The health benefits include;

  • Tones the torso, arms and hips

  • Improves posture

  • Repetitive movements like hip drops, figure eights and shimmies work the lower back in a gentle manner

  • Works the pelvic area

  • Arabic dance is regarded as a weight-bearing exercise. Osteoporosis can be prevented by such exercises

  • Can help strengthen bones

  • Great for pregnant women. Arabic dancing is good for you as it helps strengthen the muscles you use during childbirth. Some of these exercises are similar to the ones you learn at prenatal classes.

  • Some workouts can help you lose weight.

As well as health there are other benefits too, such as;

  • It helps to reduce stress

  • Femininity is something that seems to be lost here in the West, Arabic dancing gets you back in touch with your feminine side

  • Boosts your confidence. You can move your body and as you keep practising you will notice the changes in your body. It is more flexible and you feel more energised.

Arabic dancing is open to people of all ages and fitness levels-another reason for it’s growth in popularity. Here are my 2 Arabic/Belly dancing DVD’s for beginners to try;

Though I do not know how to dance, I like to watch dances. Dancing makes the body flexible and supple.
