Possessing a positive attitude is not always as easy as it might seem to be. Positive thinking is something you have to work diligently to achieve. Being stuck in negative mode is no fun either. You have a pessimistic viewpoint and can rarely find the good in any situation.

How To Step Out Of A Negative Frame Of Mind

If you are stuck with a negative way of thinking, it can be challenging to change the way you feel and how you experience life. You can do just that, though. It takes diligent practice to have a positive attitude, and here are some steps to get you started.

1) Change your mind. The only way to think differently is to decide to change. You are the only one who has control over your mind. You can control your thought process through the use of:

  • positive affirmations
  • conscious awareness of your thoughts
  • purposeful changes of reaction

2) Surround yourself with positive people. A common mistake people make is choosing friends who have a negative outlook. The more you are around negative people, the more that way of thinking will begin to take root in your mind, too. Instead, make a concerted effort to form a circle of contacts who are positive and uplifting.

3) Stay away from things that you know negatively affects you. If you know something or someone always triggers a negative attitude in you, why would you continue to place yourself in that position? Determine your negative triggers, then stay away from them, at all costs.

4) Practice, practice, practice. You won’t change your attitude overnight. But if you work consistently every day and apply yourself in a forward motion, you will be able to step out of your negative thought mode. The challenge is pushing yourself to apply constructive changes in your life, no matter how difficult they may be.

Think your way UP.
Think your way UP.

I would also suggest reading positive, inspiring books or lessons. If you spend 15 - 30 minutes first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening reading positive material, the thoughts and ideas will seep into your subconscious mind. You will change the way you think. I would recommend As A Man Thinketh, A Manual For Living - Epictetus and most of the books by Og Mandino.

It is true, you become what you think about. Think about positive things and you will be amazed how your world will change.

Hi Hope :} Forgive me but the *pun of your name cannot be escaped on this topic.

I cannot really determine if you are really refering to mode, mood swings or depression in this hub. It doesn't appear to be really about depression at all, not too much mode (in the meaning of not a mood-swing) and yet MORE than a mood swing.

All I know is this - what I have learned is that a large portion of how we think (how we are wired so to say) has a great deal to do with what we learned growing up.

Worst cases - where ppl are lead to believe growing up that they are worthless. That message being ingrained by significant adults (parents) is STRONG and we carry these messages - positive or negative and everything inbetween into adulthood like it or not.

So, it is quite obvious that for some the act of *being positive* is going to be a cakewalk compared to others....

I wish I were more clear on your real meaning...these tips you gave -

positive affirmations conscious awareness of your thoughts purposeful changes of reaction

are a small part of cognitive behaviourial therapy of which I am a Great believer and fan. However there is SO much more.

Have a great day (unless you have other plans!)

Thanks for the enlightening ideas. It's no fun being in a negative mood because it can be so contagious that it ends up creating a horrible atmosphere. Here's to postitive thinking!

I am surrounded by pessimistic and negative people and it affects me immensely. I have 2 neighbors who are somewhat that way. One man is constantly repeating negative things and the other thinks he can solves life's problems with rituals and meditations, new age beliefs such as crystals, etc. I want to get away from both these people but can't. any ideas.
