57Argentine Tango Lesson: An Argentine Tango Lesson Gets You
Dancing!
It turns out the Argentine tango is the simplest amid
ballroom dances to learn and dance right from the start. The principal beat is
the slow-slow, that is a pace, and its principal step is the walk
itself.
I arrived to my first Argentine tango lesson praying not to
embarrass myself too much and hoping not to cripple the teacher. My one relief
was to see equal fears on my classmates' faces.
The teacher, trying to
calm us down, began by commenting: "Guys, do not worry, tango is simple". She
went on: "You are here for your first Argentine tango lesson and I want to learn
what you think of the tango". A very young lady replied, saying she regarded
tango as classy, and an extraordinary way to portray yourself. The teacher
agreed, but still explained that it relied on the leader and in our way to move.
Addressing the men in the room, she explained that the leader, assisted
by the partner, should understand the music, if not, both would be parading like
soldiers. "Relax sirs", she appended, tango music is exalting and communicative,
and simple to comprehend.
Because we had signed up, she guessed we all
possessed a certain class to move. The tango demands delicate, flowing, sort of
feline-like walk, however, it is up to the leader to direct the way into a
bittersweet, happy, solemn orstill flirtatious style. Along with this, we
learned, it possesses a lot of embellishments, and our degree of ease with the
music and dance partner would let us do more or less with these.
As I
watched the group, everyone exhibiting a blend of exhilaration, anxiety and
embarrassment, I could just think that I was genuinely looking forward to this
celebrated Argentine tango lesson I had been considering for about a
year.
I could clearly comprehend it is an art that gives you freedom to
practice while you still savor dancing it in a plain way 'till you are able to
master the challenging moves, and if you choose a good partner, you are certain
to get there.
And then, the glorious music began. The teacher stated
that the aim of this first Argentine tango lesson was to immerse us in the tango
world, not only the dance. Quite valid! Once we started understanding the
performance and value, it was decipherable what we were supposed to feel as we
danced.
As we heard the talented Gardel, she explained every dance
possesses its singular music, hence, every musical composition has to be felt
intensely. Using her foot, she recreated on the floor the even one- two- three-
four series that conformed the music's major pulses and began to walk about the
dance floor to this combination. Believe it or not, I followed her, and so did
others. I was only pacing, and I was dancing. It was beautiful!
At first,
when I stated that I was interested in joining an Argentine tango lesson, my
friends joked about it. Today they watch me walk back and forth, turn with
elegance and ability, embrace with a lot of emotion, smile and enjoy so much and
they are awed... and covetous.
