Artificially Intelligent Sentient(emotion) Beings
In my previous article, What is Artificial Intelligence - AI,
I discuss what artificial intelligence is. In short, artificial
intelligence is the branch of computer science concerned with making
computers
behave like humans. Human behavior includes intellectual thought and
emotions. While it is possible to create artificial intelligence that
can mimic human intellect it may not be so in regards to emotions.
G-d created humans apart from all other animals. We have the distinct and unique ability of free thought and emotion. We are able to feel and make choices. This without a doubt is G-d's greatest creation. With the many new advances in technology today in the field of artificial intelligence the booming question is whether or not it is possible for an artificially intelligent being to have emotions. As an optimistic I would like to say yes, however my thoughts on this matter have led me to the conclusion that it may not be possible.
According to some the computer will some day be able to create artificial sentience and intelligence. According to Pythagoras the world can be broken down into mathematical formulas. All of reality including consciousness, free choice and emotions are based around math. To prove what Pythagoras said, the world works on a set of rules set forth in physics, chemistry and math. But all physics and chemistry can be broken down into mathematical formulas and therefore everything stems from math. Since emotions can be viewed as a mathematical formula, in accordance with this idea it is possible to create artificially intelligence and sentience.
To believe that emotion can be created though denies G-d's unique ability to give life. After all, we have emotions because of our biological ability to feel; 'biological' being the key factor. The reason for this is that emotions are biological in nature. The creation of an artificially intelligent and sentient being would have to be done through biological means. While it is possible to create intelligence without biological parts it is not so for emotions. To feel emotions you need a nervous system which is biological. So in essence by creating an artificially intelligent and sentient being we are simply creating a living being. Those that believe in this possibility essentially are denying G-d's unbique ability to give life.
While I hope for the possibility in the future to create artificially intelligent and sentient beings I also do believe that only G-d can give life.

You are quite right my friend. God creates life but isn't it amazing how smart he has let man become? And that isn't anything compared to God's intelligence. Still considering how little I know in this ball of bone on my shoulders, man has become pretty tall. Many blessings.
As a person who is fascinated by all three levels of this conversation- the study of computers, the study of psychology, and most importantly, the study and faith in God, I have to ask: if we can reduce emotions to a mathematical formula, giving sentience to artificial intelligence, does that in any way diminish the awesome power of God, or the importance of his biological creation, man?
I think the answer is: No. God is still God, and we are still miracles. This is much like being a kid and watching a street magician. Once you figure out the trick, it becomes meaningless to you. The part that is not grasped is that the trick isn't in the gimmick, it was in the magician's ability to captivate you. God is not a "conjurer of cheap tricks" (sorry, I had to use the Gandalf reference). Even if we crack the code, our creation is only a pale imitation of his, and his work is still miraculous.
I don't think it will be too much longer until emotions are simulated. The concept isn't that complicated, and a lot of literature has been generated that seems pretty realistic.
The other factor of this conversation is as old as man- it's our need to be "special". Does the mind come from heaven, or is the mind biological? Kind of similar: does the sun rotate around the earth, or does the earth rotate around the sun? Figuring out how to make a machine "fear" fire, or "desire" a better fuel source, even to become "frustrated" in a task- will not diminish the importance of humanity.
That is a very astute observation. The fact that we can create life does not take away from G-d's magnificent power to create. I am curious though, how you would respond to the many religious beliefs that man has a soul. The soul is not biological but rather is a part of G-d himself. If the soul is a key ingredient to man then how can we create life?
Very nice observation, Rubes. But, I believe there is a disparity in the original article. The author somewhat inappropriately links Gods ability to give life with the concept that the establishment of emotions somehow equates to the establishment of life. Even in the chemical sense, emotions are very much a process. Much of the mind is biological and chemical in nature- meaning that portion of it can be replicated. There is a logical error here that equates emotion, one part of a bigger whole, as being representative of the whole. Saying that to impart an emotion is to impart life itself is similar in an apples and coconuts kind of way to saying that the ability to record video is the same thing as a computer having "vision"... it's not the same thing by a longshot.
Since I don't believe that emotions equal life, rather that life is greater than the sum of its parts, I am at a loss to answer your question as asked. But, I do believe in a soul. I do believe that God grants life- but also, that not all living things have souls. To use your statement- our soul is derived from God. A machine's 'spirit' then- it's 'moral' compass, need for understanding and acceptance, would be a little philosophical piece of man. That's not something that I can classify as "life".

Interesting concept, but I believe you are correct in that emotions are probably biological in nature and cannot be artificially created.
