Since the iPod can be used for many different purposes, it is easy to find ways to utilize it for catching a good book on the run. Audiobooks have revolutionized the way people make it through their favorite books nowadays. Everything from the latest Harry Potter to the old English classics have been turned into audiobooks that can be listened to at home, on a computer and even on your iPod.

Your first step is to find a place to download audiobooks from. Amazon.com, along with the iTunes Music Store, offer audiobooks downloads for a price. Once you have obtained your audiobooks, you can import them into iTunes similar to the way you import music or video files. When you import the file or files, you will want to make sure you are doing it in AAC encoding. This will allow you to create bookmarks, so to speak, in the file for when you have to stop listening for whatever reason. If you import the files as MP3s, you will have to remember where you stopped in order to continue at that place when you come back to your iPod.

Once your audiobooks are imported, iTunes will do one of two things to them. If the audiobook is a single file, it will be ready for you to listen to at once. Since the file was set up as bookmarkable, it will appear in the Music section under Audiobooks. If you decided to go the MP3 route, the file will appear in your regular Music section. You can change the ID3 tags on the file, too to include composer, reader and other pertinent information for you to find it easier.

Audiobooks are just another way to take advantage of the iPod. The Shuffle in particular seems to be a popular way for audiobook fans to listen to their favorite books. All versions of the iPod, including the iPhone, are capable of audiobook support. If you are an avid reader and do not have the time to sit down with a good book anymore, perhaps investing in audiobooks on your iPod is the way to catch up on some of your favorites.
