Intro

There are so many ways of practicing Pilates that the only problem will be to choose a method of practice. But if you are an avid Pilates practicer, you can always choose to use all the different methods. Pilates is really such an excellent way of getting fit and toned and it can do wonders for your flexibility. Lets look at some of the different methods that there is to practice Pilates.

1. Pilates mat work

This is the most basic method of practicing Pilates. You would need an instructor or knowledge of Pilates to do Pilates mat work. All the Pilates exercises are done on a Pilates mat (just another name for the exercise mat). Most of the focus of Pilates mat work is on the core area - your hip flexors, abs and lower back muscles.

2. Pilates band

The Pilates band adds extra resistance to a Pilates workout. So it can firm you up quicker and you can even use it outdoors. Pilates bands come out in different resistance levels and you can tone your whole body with it.

3. Pilates rings

Pilates ring also has added resistance, but this time the Pilates equipment is ring shaped.

You can also use it to exercise your whole body and some manufacturers make the ring in different resistance levels.

4. Pilates chairs

The original Pilates chair was developed by Joseph Pilates himself. Those days the chair was very heavy and made of solid wood. Luckily for us, the Pilates chair has evolved. Nowadays the Pilates chair is mostly compact and easier to move. Pilates chairs also exercises your whole body and some chairs also have an added cardio benefits.


5. Pilates machines

Pilates machines may be a bit bigger than the other Pilates equipment, but it also give a professional Pilates studio experience right in the comfort of your own home (if you buy it for yourself). There are various different Pilates machines available and it also exercises your whole body (some even have a cardio element.).

6. Pilates videos and games

There are various different Pilates videos and games available to help you to practice regular Pilates. You can even use your Wii console with some of the Pilates games or you can place a Pilates DVD in your DVD player to get your own personal Pilates trainer (on video)

The results

Now that we have looked at the various ways of practicing Pilates, you are bound to find a method that suits you and that you like. Just remember to keep your specific budget and needs in mind. And don't buy Pilates or any other equipment just not to use it in the end. Make sure that you schedule a regular time and that you stick to your exerciser appointment.
