With the Baby Boomers starting to retire this year and start collecting Social Security, how long will it last? The old baby boomers will get to to collect for awhile, but what about the younger baby boomers? What will happen to them? Will there be enough money to take care them? Congress better start looking into this problem now because it is going to get out of hand. With the amount of money the government is spending now and our large deficit, how in the hell can they afford to keep Social Security afloat? Nobody in Congress can agree on anything or make decision. It is all politics, the party come's before the country. Congress is dragging us down to a road of no return. We the the people have to stand up and make our elective officials accountable. If they don't vote the way their constituents want them to vote, get rid of them and get somebody that will.

I love this country of our, and the United States is the greatest country in the world. If we don't step up to plate now and demand that our politicians do what is right for our country, then we are going to end up like the Roman Empire and become Third World Nation. Congress will never let Social Security go down the drain. All they need to do to put it on a sound footing is to raise or remove the income cap on contributions. Or a combination of raising the cap and raising the normal retirement age a bit more to recognize the fact that, on average, Americans are living longer and collecting SS longer.

The real hard problem to deal with is how to pay for Medicare. That will eventually be solved by Congress also once the Democrats are back in the saddle. The medicine may be hard to swallow, but more and more people are upset about not being to afford health insurance during their work life. Congress isn't about to let Medicare fail.

I just read Watkins's article. It made a lot of sense. He stated the problem very well, but he didn't propose a solution.

Here are a couple of links on Social Security--

Excellent points. I agree with the previous commenter... good analysis of the problem, what's needed is a solution.

That's EXACTLY what our organization, the American Association of Future Retirees, is about. Our aim is to be to baby boomers what AARP is to seniors. And advocacy to save Social Security is one of our primary goals. We'd love to welcome you as a member. Please check us out at http://www.aafr.org .
