Back Pain Treatment Options

A huge percentage of the population will experience back pain at some time or another in their lives. But the good news is that, when it comes to back pain management options, there are some very effective means of handling your condition. The important thing to keep in mind, though, is not to go it alone. It's important that you be properly diagnosed by your doctor and follow his or her advice to the letter. Eliminating your back doesn't happen overnight, and you have to be patient and give the treatments time to work.

Also keep in mind that a treatment that might be effective for one individual might not do anything at all for you. You'll likely have to try a variety of options before you discover the most effective treatment for your particular needs.

Usually the first recommendation for dealing with back pain is something very simplistic. It's called rest and relaxation. These days, everyone is forever running around to various appointments and responsibilities, and the thought of taking some time out is just impossible to consider. But if you want your back pain to go away, that's exactly what you need to do.

You'll need to book off work for a couple of days, and just stay home. You don't have to spend the whole time in bed, but you must limit your activities as much as humanly impossible. Hard as it may be (or maybe it would be easy for some of you!) you just have to stay off your feet and do as little as possible.

As you're lying around the house, try this simple way to relieve the pressure from your back. Lie on the floor on your back and place a cushion beneath your knees. Or lie on your back near a chair, elevate your knees, then rest your feet and lower legs on the seat of the chair.

Another common recommendation for managing back pain is to apply ice to the affected area. Heat is another option that many people find gives them relief. Try switching between the two to see which works best for you.

A lot of people deal with back pain by taking over the counter medication such as Tylenol or Advil. However, there are also many people who don't like to pop a pill to deal with their pain. They're concerned about the side effects and possible withdrawal symptoms. But there are times when it's really your only choice. Sometimes an over the counter medication will be sufficient, but for severe back pain your doctor might prescribe a stronger drug.

If your back pain is a chronic condition, physical therapy will likely be recommended by your doctor. Back problems are often the result of insufficient movement of your spine, as well as the muscles, ligaments and tendons that support it. Physical therapy typically consists of gentle exercises that will help ease your pain and realign the joints of your spine. For instance, back pain therapy often involves using an exercise ball to strengthen your core muscles. Stretches are also a big component of physical therapy.

Other treatments for back pain include alternative therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic and massage. These therapies work by stimulating the injured muscles, nerves and tissues in your back. These treatments might cause you a bit of discomfort. However, if you experience pain, stop the treatment immediately.

Once you get to the place where your back pain is under control, your next task is to learn how to keep it from recurring. It's important that you take the proper preventative steps so that your back pain doesn’t return. For starters, learn to lift things in the correct way by bending at the knees. Don’t try to lift objects that are beyond your capabilities. These two tips alone would save most people from ever experiencing back pain problems.

Stretching and regular exercise are also highly important. Even if you have a busy schedule, it's important that you find the time to include a stretching routine and some cardiovascular exercise in your day. Strength training is also important in order to build up your core muscles.

The critical point here is that you need to be proactive with regards to your back pain. The worst thing you can do is just ignore it and hope it goes away, all the while downing pain relievers every few hours. Your condition will only get worse, and you might end up with permanent damage to your spine. That's just not worth the risk.
