Using a Background Check Liza Campbell gave Jaycee her freedom.

A canny Liza Campbell carried out a background check on Garrido because he just made her feel unsettled. The results showed he was a violent sex offender on parole. Jaycee’s freedom was a direct consequence of that background check. A background check carried out by a suspicious Liza Campbell.

Background checks are no longer the sole prerogative of the law enforcement agencies. The Freedom of Information Act and other changes in the Law, together with the advent of computers, the internet, and online Background Check services, has resulted in all of us being able to carry out background checks on anyone. Thank goodness we can when it results in people like Jaycee getting her freedom after all these years, and monsters like Garrido being apprehended.

I find this all rather tough to take in. What if! Lets say Liza Campbell didn’t have access to a background check service? The result could have been catastrophic. How much longer would Jaycee have to cope with captivity? When would this tragic saga have ended?

In more detail. Liza Campbell, special events manager at the University of California, Berkley, was talking to Garrido regarding him holding an event at the campus. She had another commitment, so she asked him to return the following day.

Liza believed the encounter strange enough to perform a background check on Garrido, revealing his past history. Campbell then asked Allison Jacobs, Police Officer, to sit in on the meeting the next day.

This resulted in Jacobs disclosing to Garrido’s parole officer of the two daughters and then the whole sorry saga unfolded.

Today we can all have our suspicions allayed or confirmed by carrying out our own Background Checks
