Increase your pagerank with automatic backlinks - Don't kid yourself

By Mark Knowles

I am a big fan of learning by personal experience, and as making money online is a constant learning experience I decided to try a piece of automatic backlink software recently. I was a little wary because I had heard horror stories of google reducing your pagerank, but on the other hand, I also heard zillions of people testify that they would never live without them.

The system I decided to try was Neurolinker and I decided to try it after the owner of the company that makes and sells this product stopped by another hub – Neurolinker and other backlink software, and argued the case for his software. Silly me………..

The horror stories are all true. I must say, neurolinker does exactly what they promise – you install a piece of script on one of your pages, and it generates outgoing links by the bucketful in exchange for incoming links from other sites. Their customer service is excellent and any queries are answered ASAP and dealt with. But – and this is a BIG but – when the google bot discovers you are using this service your page rank will be reduced just as ASAP.

Automatic backlinks to get more page rank? I don't think so.
Automatic backlinks to get more page rank? I don't think so.

Crap! I had the page rank reduced on all the sites I was using this on and in one case had a -3 penalty applied. Mark was not a happy bunny when that happened.

Still – you live and learn and I have now removed the neurolinker software and written to google explaining my error and asking for forgiveness. If not forgiveness, at least a re-instatement of my previous pagerank. Within two days I had the rank restored to one site and I am hoping the rest will follow suit.

So – in answer to the question, “Can I increase my pagerank with automatic backlinks,” the answer is a resounding, “Fuck No!” I wouldn’t touch another service like this with a bargepole and now have to verify a bunch of sites and do some more groveling. Oh well, now I know. My gut reaction was to not use this thing and I should have listened to my inner self. I was seduced by the dark side for just a moment and it cost me. It is important that my blogs are all well ranked by google, because that is how I demonstrate how clever I am. Not feeling too clever at the moment. Fortunately I only experimented and did not add it to all my sites.

This is just another in the long line of learning experiences that go with making money blogging. I am hoping that one day, I will not have to learn anything new…….. Nah – not really, that would be boring.

Edit. After a question in the comments, I have added this. This is where to go if this has happened to you and you wish to resolve the problem:

Oh Mark, never, never, never link OUT to dodgy sites or sites completely unrelated to your site's niche (unless they happen to be CNN or wikipedia) linking OUT you have to be very careful! Linking in is somewhat different and there are automated tools that help but you have to be subtle - throwing 1000's of links in a few days will upset the big G a LOT LOL

Mark, maybe you don't know the the answer to this question, but why is dealing with Google so much like asking for another bowl of gruel from Bumble? It seems like a big weird game of "Mother may I?" and never do understand it. I had ads removed from a hub once because I used the word 'boobs' as tagline. Removed the tag, got the ads back. Am I REALLY that much of a danger to internet society> Are you? I mean, it seems to me like, compared to Huffington Post or the Drudge Report or some site like that, we are all such little, little fish. Why does the Google torment us so?

Hey Mark, I got 3 PR's wiped off my travel blog and I still don't know why, I don't remember changing anything significant. I thought PR3 for a travel blog was reasonable so thought I would just keep doing what I was doing and now I haven't even got a zero just not ranked at all.

Maybe you could point me at where to write and ask why? That's if they even take any notice.

Anyway, hope that makes you feel better.

I had a reduction in PR on a site I tested a similar service on. I knew what would happen, but I have to test everything myself.

Nothing beats building up back links from various sources spread out over time rather than some plug-in script.

For instance if you submit articles, do one a week, every week, and use a different deep link each time.

....and for God's sake.....don't expect instant results, sites are updated at different intervals. You may submit to one article site today, PR1, it may take 2 week for the article to be OK'd, then 4 weeks for Google to index it!!

I have site that has its posts indexed within 20 minutes of posting....Google loves me :o)

Great article Mark. I am a little surprised that you took THAT plunge as I thought you have been doing the internet thing for quite a while, and that you knew to stay away from that sort of thing. I do appreciate your openess and honesty in telling your story. I follow very few people on HP's, but you are one author that I look forward to reading your articles. Bottom line in the whole net marketing thing is that people are looking for information. Search engines are getting smarter in delivering that information. 'Black hat' techniques and tricks are becoming a thing of the past, which is really good for those of us offering real usefull information and products on the net. There are still techniques and things to learn about SEO and search ranking, but we don't want to take shortcuts or try to 'trick' the engines.

As far as PR goes for the average person's site, if I understand it correctly, then I say don't worry about it. It doesn't affect where you show up in a search listing for certain keywords. I can have a PR of zero and still be number one on Google for my targeted keywords. That's not just theory, I've done it. PR is most valuable when it's sites that link to your site. You want high PR sites pointing to you. PR is a lot about traffic numbers.

For the average Joe with a website who wants to make some money with it, my advice is to learn some basic SEO or hire someone who knows it, provide a lot of good content in a niche that you know something about, and you are on your way to selling your product or service.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

Thanks Tom,

As I keep trying to tell everyone - I am a writer, not an internet marketer. So - I had to find out for myself if these things work or not. I am still learning the SEO side of things as I go. Fitting it into natural writing is what I am trying to do now.

And I am learning that page ranking and search engine rankings do go together. You are not going to get a PR1 page ranked for a term that has 200 PR4 pages and a bunch of higher ranking sites ranked for it.

But - I would add to what you just said - if you provide good quality content in a niche that is NOT TOO competitive you can be on your way.

If a software can give us automated backlinks that's a very good news.Submitting backlinks manually extremely tedious job, I submitted a few so far.I think Google is afraid of loosing the market of their Adword business, that's why they put penalty on the use of automated backlink software.

Well, I was in the process of 'kidding myself' and having fun on 'the dark side' because I just read something about backlinks - and how I need them.

But instead I'll have a glass of wine and calm down and just enjoy writing my hubs - which I really do enjoy doing - and a monthly check is a nice motivator.

Thanks for sharing this info - humor and all!

Thanks Mark for saving the rest of us! Meanwhile my flamenco site, with a PR of 1, is flying. I don't get this internet marketing stuff. In any case, I now know one thing NOT to try!

Excellent post. I frequently jump on something and windup with the short end of the stick. I am sincere in hoping that Google will give you some more mercy. It would be ideal to see them all reinstated, however i doubt that would happen.

Best of luck to you
