Lifestyle Changes and Exercise for Chronic Back Pain Relief
Four out of five people will experience back pain at some time in their life. Lower back pain can be caused by many different reasons. Injuries, weak abdominal muscles, muscle imbalance, improper posture, and other factors can all contribute to painful problems. However, hopefully, through lifestyle changes and exercise one can experience at least some chronic back pain relief.
If you experience back pain, especially low back pain, walking is one of the best exercises for it. Sitting puts the most amound of pressure on lower back followed by standing whereas standing and walking put less pressure on the back. In addition to putting less pressure on the spinal column, walking increases the blood circulation to the back, buttocks, and legs. Furthermore, it stretches and strengthens the muscles.
If you do have to remain in one position for too long, there is an exercise developed by McKinsey which will help. In this exercise, you lay on the floor on your stomach. Place your palms on the floor level with your chest. Keeping your legs on the floor, raise the upper half of your body up with your arms. It's like a modifiied push up. Do this ten times for a count of ten every two hours. Often this will start relieving the back pain after a few day. The theory is that you are stretching your back muscles in the opposite direction than when you are sitting.
Another reason for lower back pain is weak abdominal muscles and tight hamstring muscles. Thus, crunches and hamstring stretches will help strengthen these muscles. If you're overweight, losing weight, especially if carry fat in the abdominal area, will help reduce pressure on your spine.

Different sleeping positions can also exacerbate back pain. Sleeping on your stomach is the hardest on the back pain. Sleeping on your back with a pillow propped underneath your knees will relieve pressure. You can also sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees.
Pain is a signal that there is a problem. Do not ignore it or your condition can worsen. Hopefully, some of these suggestions will give you chronic back pain relief. If your back pain doesn't improve with these exercises and lifestyle changes, you should seek medical treatment.

I found, for my injury and disc herniation sleeping with a pillow between your knees and on your side is great, but it only lasted a short time til I had to turn, and that was pain in itself.

It is more the middle region of my back which hurts sometimes when I run, my standing posture is'nt great as well. I'm going the gym three times a week but think i could be making the problem worse if it is something to do with posture.
I will try the exercises and keep you posted.
thanks for your help.
