Some quick methods include smelling floss after using it on your back teeth, wiping the top of your tongue with cotton gauze and smelling it, or even licking the back of your hand, then smelling it about ten seconds later.

You can also look at your tongue, and see if the back of it is white in color. If you ask a friend, have them do checks throughout the day, since your breath can change often. Also, a halimeter check can be done by a professional if you think you have chronic bad breath.

What can you do for bad breath

There are a number of products that can help you to neutralize that bad breath before it becomes a huge problem. A lot of them are products that you may already be using, or which will require only a slight change in your hygiene or shopping habits. Over the counter bad breath solutions can sometimes be helpful, though you should be careful about mouthwashes (more on that later). When you look for products to help with bad breath, look for ingredients such as baking soda (if you like all-natural products), which are great for killing bacteria. You can find baking soda in many toothpastes, which is a nice way to improve your breath.

Probably the single best way to eliminate bad breath is to use a combination of strategies including proper brushing and flossing, avoiding where possible known foods that can cause bad breath and getting regular dental checkups. All of these methods working together will give you a much better chance of curing bad breath.

A lot of the most popular ways to treat bad breath are not really solutions at all, but instead are temporary fixes or cover-ups. These would include such products as gum or mouthwashes, which usually only positively affect your breath for a short while, and are mostly covering up the problem instead of actually addressing the root of the issue.

Gum can be great for covering up your bad breath, but stay away from sugary gum, as it will only help to create more bacteria (and problems for your teeth) in the long run. Meanwhile, be wary of mouthwashes that use alcohol as an ingredient. This is because the alcohol found in mouthwashes has the effect of drying your mouth out, which only makes your mouth that much more inviting of a breeding ground for germs and bacteria.
