The History of Handbags

Handbags have been an important and stylish ladies accessory for hundreds of years. In the 16th century a small pouch was suspended around a ladies waist, but by the late 18th century when dresses were soft and flowing, a bulging pouch would have spoiled the line. Instead, decorated fabric bags with drawstrings began to be used. Ladies could now carry around a whole host of items from letters and visiting cards to fans.

By the 1870s large leather handbags were becoming popular for visiting and shopping trips and during the early 20th century, new handbag styles appeared that reflected women's freer lifestyles of the time.

After 1918 as more women went out to work, the handbag had to adapt to holding all manner of things, ranging from lipstick holders and powder compacts to cigarette holders and lighters. The clutch bag was the favorite of the 1920s and remains a popular handbag style even today.
