Bandwidth Shaping - It's A Good Practice

I know you might say that I'm crazy for saying bandwidth shaping is a good practice. Honestly, yes. But there is one good reason to turn that table. For the sake of our earth. That is it.

Nowadays, our earth has become sick of our selfish attitude, which is just only want to satisfy our needs without even thinking and care about 'him'. Have you ever thought that torrent was one contributor towards pollution and global warming?

When we download from torrent, we need to let torrent window to open as long as we can so that the tracker not blacklisting our IP address. Normally people leave their computer until morning to upload a file that downloaded until reach ratio 1:1. But upload is much slower than download and it 'takes forever to done'. There is no alternative except leave our PC on until morning. So, how long does it takes to upload a 350mb file with 15kB/second speed? Around 6 hours and 30 minutes if the speed constant at that rate.

It doesn't matter if you have higher speed than stated here because you will download a bigger size or more files, so times for uploading still long. And the cycle is same for everybody. This is the point why bandwidth shaping is good. Your usage of internet has become limited when P2P application can't perform like it should be. The only way to gain movies is file hosting, IRC or buying an original thing. Lower electric consumption also applied by this practice. Then, global warming will be slower. However, international company maybe effected by this. But I assume that they will be excepted from ISP provider since they pay for dedicated line.

By the way, people become smarter when facing a same problem. A solution to avoid bandwidth shaping will come up everyday. Knowledge is power, but said no to this problem for the sake of our lovely earth. Demand always exceeding resources. That's what a human being is.

Bandwidth Shaping - Pros and Cons

The practice of bandwidth shaping has been applied by most ISPs around the world. Bandwidth shaping can be defined as limiting data transfer. Most ISPs claimed that it's a win-win situation for users. Should we believe on this?

Obviously, we can reject it. However, it looks like something fishy about this. The secret behind this practice was already revealed by internet users. Spending money and time to upgrading bandwidth is a 'must thing' that ISPs want to avoid. But, don't take the wrong way. They just want to make more bucks so that they can invest more in the next the bandwidth upgraded. Should ISPs spend more than they should when it's caused by heavy downloaders who download copyright materials? Should ISPs compromise? One research said 2478 songs were downloaded illegally.

Based on all reason, cause and effect, we should say ISPs' action is right. Every day, the producing companies loss revenue caused by illegal download. P2P software has identified itself as 'cyber threat' for producing companies. Watching new movie through internet is normal although they movie was just released.

Bandwidth shaping shows that ISPs had an agreement with entertainment industries in the effort to lessen illegal download. Paying summons for illegal download will become more popular later. The best way now is to stop downloading copyright materials. File hosting will become the most popular source after P2P is dying.

As conclusion, the effort of bandwidth shaping to stop illegal download is success but P2P is only one source. New sources will exist one by one in the future.

This is an important message. Thank you for writing about this issue. The whole purpose of bit torrenting is to get something for free that normally one would have to pay for. The whole practice I think is unethical on a variety of levels.

The affect torrenting has on climate change is insignificant. A single cow produces enough methane in a night to account for about ten people torrenting.
