Among the group of activities classified as youth sports, baseball is that wonderful all-American tradition that has been passed on from one generation of baseball players to another. It has become an integral part of American culture such that kids across the country have taken a liking for this game. In fact, one major proof for the popularity of baseball in the US is the prevalence of little leagues, in which thousands of kids participate to play baseball and have fun in the process.

If you ask any parent who has attended a little league game or two as to why they have chosen to allow their child to participate in such a sporting event, they will probably say the same thing: baseball not only improves the physical health of their child, it also allows children to socialize and develop latent talents early on. Admittedly, not all of these kids grow up to be the professional players of the future. In fact, majority of the little league players who are actively involved will pursue different careers in the future. For these kids, little league serves as a playground in which they can have fun with their friends.

For those little kids who turn out to have real talent for the game, chances are, they will pursue such a career in the future. Therefore, it is important that their talents be recognized and harnessed at an early stage in their career. In this light, the role of the parents and the little league coach cannot be emphasized more in terms of recognizing and harnessing these kids’ talents. This is where effective little league baseball coaching drills come into play.

Any good little league coach will tell us that the key to a winning team is of course, the development of each individual player’s strengths. Given a team in which all the players’ talents and strengths are maximized, the coach will be able to assign each player a task and rely on him or her to deliver the goods in every single game. Part of what makes a coach’s responsibility so challenging is the task of devising a practice regimen for his or her players. These practice sessions should be well-planned and tailor-made for the needs of the team. For instance, if the team is not a solid hitting team, then the coach can choose from a variety of drills to work on this weakness. In choosing the right set of drills, the coach must keep in mind that he or she is dealing with kids and that the chosen drills must be suitable for the players who will perform them.

At the same time, it is also important that the drills match the needs of the team. No matter how popular a drill is, it will produce different results for different teams. Thus, the perfect set of little league baseball coaching drills must have the following characteristics as the ones presented below.

The drills must be easy to do

The cardinal rule in performing any type of drill—be it for professional or little league baseball--is that it should be easy to accomplish. After all, a drill entails the repetition of the particular act until it becomes natural for the player to perform such an act. The more complicated the drill is, the longer it takes for the player to get used to it. On the other hand, the simpler the drill is, the easier it is for the player to remember, repeat, and acquire. In this case, children are more likely to perform better and at the same rate as the others, because it does not take much to accomplish the necessary steps to complete the drill. In this sense, it is also a good idea to gather everyone and explain properly how the drill should be done.

The drills must target a specific skill one at a time

Along with the cardinal rule of simplicity, it is important that a little league coach aim for a ladderized approach to developing the skills of his or her players. Thus, rather than make the players perform various drills during one practice session, it is better to make them master one drill at a time until it becomes almost natural to them, before moving on to the next, more complicated drill. This way, the players will not be confused and they will be able to have more time absorbing what goes on during the drill and what are the basic objectives of the drills they are doing. To reiterate what has been mentioned above, little league baseball coaching drills must be explained properly to the kids to ensure proper performance.

The drills must be suitable to the physical capacities of small children

The little league baseball coach must keep in mind at all times that he or she is dealing with small children. As much as they would want to achieve success by winning more games, there is no question that the safety and well-being of the players should be their top priority. No coach should push the children beyond their physical limits. In choosing drills, the coach must choose those that are kid-friendly and do not require too much exertion and expended effort. Keep in mind that the level of difficulty is indirectly proportional to a drill’s repeatability: the more difficult it is, the less able will the kids be to repeat them properly.

The drills must be fun

Last but not least, the drills must be fun. It is common knowledge that kids follow instructions better when they are less pressured and stressed. By making the drills fun and almost game-like, the coach increases the probability that the kids will be able to learn more from these, thereby deriving the full benefits from the drill being performed.

For a list of well-established and safe little league baseball coaching drills, there are various websites that maintain a database of all drills with ratings and reviews from other coaches across the US. By browsing through these, any coach will be able to come up with the best set of drills for his or her team
