Top Basketball Drills

Basketball is a sport that requires players to be able to play both offense and defense. It also requires players to be in great shape because all the players will have to run up and down the court. So, during practice players should be required to perform drills that will help them get into shape and will help them learn how to be solid offensive and defensive players. The top basketball drills that will do this are the 7 Second 1 v 1 Drill, the Star Drill, and the Circles Drill.

Many people believe that shooting is the most important part of basketball and should be drilled the most in basketball practice. However, this isn’t true. While scoring is obviously very important, it’s something players can work on alone so it shouldn’t be drilled too much in practice. That’s why the top basketball drills work on dribbling, playing defense, and passing the ball.

The 7 Second 1 v 1 Drill is one of the top basketball drills because it works on dribbling, scoring, and defense. For this drill a player stands with the ball between the 3-point line and the half-court circle. Another player matches-up and plays defense against the player with the ball.

The coach blows the whistle and the player with the ball has 7 seconds to try to score. The player with the ball should be encouraged to use cross-over dribbles, spin moves, and any other moves to try to beat the defender. The defender should be instructed to play good solid defense and not buy any fakes by the ball handler.

The Star Drill is one of the top basketball drills because it works on the players passing drills and can also be used to help conditioning. This drill is run by the players starting out in a formation that looks like a star. All the players should be facing each other.

The ball begins in the hands of one of the players and that player passes the ball to the player opposite him. Then the player who caught the ball passes to the player who is just to the right of where the first pass came from. Once a pass is made the passer has to sprint through the star and get to where the pass went before another pass gets to the spot.

This drill can be run for 5 minutes or even longer. The longer it’s run the more it will help with conditioning.

The final drill that’s good is the Circles Drill. This drill works on a player’s dribbling ability. It’s very easy to do. A player lines up on one of the three circles on the floor with two balls. That player then dribbles both balls while running around the outside of the circle. This drill will help the players with their ball handling.

It’s important for players to get better with passing, dribbling, and playing defense. It’s also important for a basketball player to be in good shape. Three top basketball drills that accomplish all these things are the 7 Second 1 v1 Drill, the Star Drill, and the Circles Drill.
