Basset Hound Bath Time!

Did you know that when you are searching for reputable basset hound breeders you shouldn't only ensure the hounds they produce are healthy and meet the requirements of the breed standard? Another important thing you will want to find out is why the breeder decided to choose basset hounds and the particular pedigree for their breeding program.

Basset hound breeders of good reputation do not leave breeding to chance. They have purposely selected the sire and dam based on their looks and/or temperament for the purpose of producing a litter of champion dogs that are ideal for showing or competing. Conversely, a breeder will also encourage the production of pooches that are fit for family companionship only.

Therefore, when you find a basset breeder that you like, find out if their main purpose for breeding is to produce show dogs or family pets. The chances are what you will discover is that most basset hound breeders are primarily focused on producing champion dogs. However, since not all of the bassets in their litters will be fault free (I.E. some may be disqualified as show dogs for not being the right size, have fur that is too soft, etc.), and the demand for show dogs varies, they will also sell to people looking for a family pet.

That being said, what you need to understand is that while there is nothing wrong with obtaining a basset puppy from a person who breeds champions, you should know that the best dogs will be reserved for the breeder and those interested in dog showing. Nevertheless, understand that this does not mean you will have less of a chance to find a pup with the temperament best suited to your needs and lifestyle, it simply means the most pristine pooches won't be available for the picking.

Therefore, in order to obtain the best possible dog from basset hound breeders, inform the breeder about your home life (I.E. you have children, live in an apartment, have other pets, have never owned a dog or this breed before, etc.). Based on the hounds that have not yet been spoken for, they will then choose the pooch they believe will be the best match to your situation.
