Basset Hound information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Despite being bred for hunting and loving the outdoors, basset hounds are prone to obesity. This is because when they are indoors, the basset is an extremely inactive and lazy dog. He is happy to engage in play, but he is equally as happy lounging on a comfy sofa for hours on end. Therefore, as a hound owner, it is your responsibility to make sure that your pet receives the exercise he needs to prevent him from becoming obese.
You may think that chubby basset hounds look cute, but as charming as an overweight dog may seem, the reality is that obesity is a very serious health issue that can cause a pooch suffering and lead to a premature death. Furthermore, an obese pet is at a greater risk for developing health problems, such as diabetes mellitus, and it also places additional stress on their joints and back.
How can bassets become obese? There are different factors you need to be aware of including:
- Overeating - Feeding your pet more than he requires for his size
- Foods high in fat - Dog cookies, wet food, and many types of human food.
- Lack of exercise - Not providing your hound with adequate daily exercise and playtime
- Health problems - I.E. hypothyroidism
- Age
How will I know if my dog is overweight? Stand him up and feel his ribs by touching him under his belly. You will easily feel the ribs of basset hounds that are of a healthy weight, whereas a plump pooch will have an extra layer of fat over their ribs, and you will really need to press firmly in order to feel them. Also, dogs that are a good size have waistlines that are defined by an indentation.
If you believe that your canine is overweight or obese, you should have your veterinarian examine him. It is important that you have him checked by a professional to rule out any health problems. Moreover, a vet can help you determine what the best lifestyle and diet changes would be best suited to your animal. Thus, don't just reduce his food or suddenly subject him to a new exercise regimen without first knowing what you are dealing with.
Overweight basset hounds are usually placed on a special low calorie food brand, or your vet may suggest specific meals you can provide. Slowly introduce the new food by adding a little more of it and less of the old food each day. Their entire diet should be changed in 7 - 10 days. Do not feed your pet any treats or human food snacks while you are attempting to reduce their weight. If it is necessary for you to give a treat, ask the vet about acceptable low calorie cookies or people snacks.
Aside from a different feeding regimen, bassets will also need to be taken out a minimum of two times per day, for 20 minute walks. In addition to walking, your pet should be provided with the freedom to run around and playtime. Note: you should wait 20-30 minutes after he has eaten before exercising him.
Finally, remember to be patient, because weight loss does not occur in basset hounds overnight.
