One of the features that tend to make basset hound puppies so cute are their long and floppy ears. Unfortunately, this endearing characteristic can also be the bane of a basset's existence, because it can cause them health problems. The reason is since the pooch has long ears that hang close to their head; the inside of the ear does not receive proper air circulation. Furthermore, their drooping ears trap dirt when they drag on the floor or ground. Thus, there is a build up of moisture and dirt which makes the dog more susceptible to developing excess ear wax that has a strong odor. If this excessive wax is not cleaned appropriately, an ear infection can result.

Therefore, if you want to stop your basset hound puppies from developing ear infections, you need to take preventative action, and get them used to weekly ear cleaning sessions. The following is what you will need for general ear care, as well as how to go about cleaning the ears.

Products required:

  • Cotton balls
  • Cotton swab
  • Damp wash cloth
  • Ear cleaning solution - This is optional. However, if you choose to use a solution, it is best to purchase a product from your vet or pet store. If you insist on making your own cleansing solution, a mixture of vinegar and water is an acceptable substitute because vinegar helps to reduce infection as it neutralizes the climate that feeds yeast.

Two-Step Ear cleaning

  • Step 1 - Start with the outer area. Dampen a cotton ball with water or your cleaning solution and remove any dirt in this region. Pay close attention to the small folds and crevices of each ear.
  • Step 2 - Target the inner ear. Carefully and gently pour cleaning solution into your basset hound puppies ears so that the canal is filled. Softly massage the ear for approximately 15 - 20 seconds to help loosen any dirt or wax. Use cotton balls to remove the excess fluid and dirt from the inner ear, but take care not push the cotton ball into the canal.

If your basset has a serious build up of wax, or the wax has hardened, you should take your dog to the vet for professional cleaning. In this situation, do not attempt to clean your pet's ears at home because you can actually make the problem worse.

Finally, when giving your basset hound puppies a bath, use large cotton balls to prevent water from entering the ear canals. Also, always dry off their ears anytime they come in contact with water, or are in an environment heavy with moisture and humidity.
