If you prefer a hardware Beat maker
You may want to work with a stand along beatmaker instead of using a software beatmaker that runs on your computer The stand along beat makers do not need a computer ....but you will need a mixer or some type of amp/ preamp set up to hear them...unless you like using headphones.......I use both software and hardware beat makers depending on what style of music I am dealing with, and a few other factors.....but there are lots of hardware beat makers on the market today that will get the job done for you.....One of the best in my opinion as well as a lot of other well known producers is the MPC series of beat makers.....they have and probably are still used on more hit records than any other beat maker ever made.....but let me say also that there are other beat makers that are well worth mentioning and have shaped the music industry in various ways...such as the Roland drum machines or beat makers......The famous 808 kick drum which was first per say invented by a developer for roland, is heard on more hip hop/ rap tracks than any other sound , and has been so for over 20 years......although many other drum machines now use this sample as a standard kick drum sound...it was first made famous on a broad scale in a drum machine that was produced by Roland back in the day called a Roland 808......The Roland 909 was also widely used, and it's samples are still popular today......The Yamaha Spx 90 was extremely popular back in the day and in my opinion is one of the best sounding beat makers I have ever heard....but because of its interface which was lacking features that you now see on the newer beat makers.....and the fact that it was so expensive.......caused it to be phased out. Now you hardly ever see one ...which is a shame considering how great it sounds.
The MPC is still considered the cream of the crop for most hip hop and rap producers. It is the go to beat maker for most big time producers in the industry and I have seen it in more big name studios of well known producers, like Dallas Austin , Jermain Dupree (JD) , R Kelly, LIL JOHN, Baby Face, my partner James Bevel, and many more, than any other beat maker.....but the Roland series of beat makers are nothing to sneeze at and also offer more bang for your buck considering there prices.....I have used a lot of beat makers...such as the Alesis drum machines , EMU percussion module, Boss...which is a division of Roland, Yamaha ...and so on...and they are all good.....but something about the MPC always seems to win out with me.....( The sound of it is one thing I know for sure) but this is a personal preference ..and is greatly due to the styles of music I work with most of the time.
When software beat makers first came out......they did not sound anywhere as good as most of the higher end beat makers.....but that has changed in the recent years due to better sound cards...higher sample rates and more powerful computers as well as better written programs.......A large number of producers now create all there beats just using software with in there computers......with great success. But I like variety....so I do both.
I have not had the liberty to program on the new models of Roland beat makers , but ...I love the MPC so much because of its sound and ease of use, so why would I change?..Although I do still use some of the other beat makers to add variety or for a particular sound they may have in there library....for instance...the Procussion by EMU has some killer kick drum sounds including the famous 808 sample.......MPC drum machines was at one time too expensive for most independent producers to get....but recently ...due to competition ....they have come out with a new line of drum machines that are priced so that most producers can get there hands on one......although the cheaper ones don't have all the bells and whistles the top of the line MPC 5000 and its sister the MPC 2500 do...they still pack a powerful punch of features and great sound into a smaller package. Watch the video below to see the MPC 5000 in action.
