Avoid addiction to Social networking sites

After the dot com bust Google created a paradigm shift by targeted advertising which not only gave a new lease of life to Internet based dot com business but created a whole series of cult behind it. Thus began a game of attracting your eye balls’attention to the computer screens and more specifically to the advertisements.

The whole lot of businesses have sprouted that simply vie for your time and attention be it Face-book, Myspace, Twitter, Orkut and others, without any prejudice to the useful activity and networking opportunities provided by such social sites, what is intended here to warn you against the excesses. Since these excesses have potential to hurt you more than benefit you in long terms.

People are hooked to these sites and spend a lot of there time in front of computer screens. They even forego their physical activities and many other responsibilities simply because they seem to be addicted to such social sites.

A cursory look at many such blaring sites will show you how a whole brigade of online marketers are rushing to draw you to their site one way or the other and just wish you to click on the banners and advertisements from their sites so that they can earn from the “earn per click” programs.

Just click on one of such self proclaimed online marketing guru’s site and you will get the taste of what is being served. If they are to be believed it seems as if all the money will be made simply by clicking on the network in the coming future.

Actually it’s now going to be the turn of the internet business to turn realistic (after finance and real estate) and serve the business, economy and society in some worth-while way. The gizmo effect and the very vow! effect of communication technology had its sway longer that it deserved. For how long one clicking site will keep paying the other clicking company without any thing being produced that has useful value to society. It’s high time that somebody somewhere is going to have to pick up the tab for lunch as time for free lunches in internet economy is slowly but steadily getting over.

By any chance I am not saying that the days of internet are over, on the contrary the use and spread of internet is going to multiply like never before, but it will happen with some useful value addition at every stage.

And here comes the Scientific Advice

After putting down the above write up, yesterday (14th April, 2009), I read an article on CNN network titled: Scientists warn of Twitter dangers. Following part is copied from the article to give you the message as it is:

Rapid-fire TV news bulletins or getting updates via social-networking tools such as Twitter could numb our sense of morality and make us indifferent to human suffering, scientists say.

New findings show that the streams of information provided by social networking sites are too fast for the brain's "moral compass" to process and could harm young people's emotional development.

Before the brain can fully digest the anguish and suffering of a story, it is being bombarded by the next news bulletin or the latest Twitter update, according to a University of Southern California study.

"If things are happening too fast, you may not ever fully experience emotions about other people's psychological states and that would have implications for your morality,"

Thank you IslandVoice, I think the right way to achieve that healthy balance is by adopting effective Time Management. Now time management has been made such a difficult thing by today’s books, I have tried to be different and proposed a easier and logically sound methodology in my own forth coming book. Shall keep you updated.
