You will need some equipment to start with a successful beekeeping activity. You must buy this equipment before the post office calls you to come collect your bees. The most important piece of equipment you need is the beehive.

Your beehive must have no less than five supers. The supers are important to the beehive because this is the place where the honey will be stored. The beehive bottom should be below the five supers and the cover must be on top. Young honeybees will also be breed in the supers, apart from the storage of honey. About 9 to 10 frames will develop in each of these ten frames as the hive becomes active. You can opt for a shallow super or for a deep super. When you get a hive with a deep super, you will need to purchase just a single size of foundation. Be warned though! A buzzing hive with a deep super can go up to a hundred pounds in weight. Place your beehive on a plane flat surface, because you don't want to take the chance of it turning over when there's a strong wind. Keep it in a place where no one else or your pets can disturb it. It is possible to keep the frames at equal distances from each other as long as they are in the super by using a device known as a spacer.

The device you will now need is a smoker. The purpose of the smoker is to drive the bees out, it comes in handy when you want to do some honey harvesting. You will find that the smoker is an uncomplicated device. The basic design of the smoker includes a combustion chamber along with a funnel and bellows. Many beekeepers claim that old, clean burlap is the best material to use in the smoker because burlap is easy to ignite and smolders and smokes. You can also use dry corn cobs. Light the fire in the combustion chamber. The bellows will see to it that it is kept going. With the help of the funnel, you can direct the smoke into the beehive.

Another tool you will need is a metal hive tool. Your metal hive tool will come in handy when you have to pry the hive open, separate the compartments of the hive and for its cleanliness. You can describe this device by saying that this is the most all-purpose tool in the beekeeper's kit. Without a bee brush, getting bees is just not wise. In order to study the frames, you will have to get the bees out of the way. This is where your bee brush will come in handy.

You will need a fumer board when you decide to remove the honey. This is a special board dabbed with bee repelling chemicals. It will drive the bees from the super so that you can take their honeycombs. You can get preowned beekeeping material for cheap on eBay. You can get both professional and amateur beekeeping stuff from catalogs and websites.
