Baseball Pitching from Scratch

As you are beginning in baseball pitching, you will want to consider all different aspects of baseball training. First, you will want to make sure that there is a physical place in which to start to master the craft. Being able to get the skills and the lessons that you are looking for are going to start with beginning with the proper techniques so as to allow for best success.

Learning to Throw

In order to be able to find success in baseball pitching you will first need to learn how to throw. Being able to establish a way to deliver the ball from point A to point B on a consistent basis is the step number one. Learning proper technique as well as continuous repetition is integral. Learning how to release the ball at a certain point as well as how to drive and push from your legs and not only from your arm.

Developing a Method

Finding a way to be able to deliver the ball over the plate is going to be a huge obstacle in baseball pitching. Depending on the type of delivery that you feel most comfortable with will determine the type of pitcher you will be.

There is the traditional over the top style predominantly used by power pitchers. In this style you are hurling the ball with an overhead motion driving with the legs in an attempt to get the ball over the plate as fast as possible.

There is the side arm delivery where the pitcher throws the ball with their arm almost perpendicular to the ground. Here the pitcher is relying predominantly on ball movement as the way to distract and befuddle hitters.

There is the submarine style of baseball pitching. Here the pitcher leans to the their throwing side in some cases almost hitting their arm on the ground trying to confuse the hitter based on the angle the ball comes at them.

Learning Pitches

There are a number of different pitches to consider to learn as you start baseball pitching. There is the traditional fastball and curve ball that many will rely on as the primary pitches. Each pitch will have a different release and grip in order for it to be effective and as one will go through baseball training the student will learn each of the different grips as well as which of the pitches they learn will be the most effective for them to use.

As a pitcher learns the game of baseball pitching, they will learn when to use certain pitches and how to disguise them to be effective. Knowing and learning how to be effective at baseball pitching will come from baseball training. Learning to throw the ball the same way over and over again is the first step. To be able to throw the ball to the same spot consistently will lead to consistency. Once this is learned, then the ability to try and change arm angles and then delivery speeds will come more naturally.

Physical Fitness

It is never too early to get yourself into good physical condition for baseball training. Doing normal cardio workouts as well as conditioning and weight training will help increase stamina and durability. In addition to doing these things, you should try to work in some flexibility training as well. Setting a routine that is stringent and adhered to in order to maintain a high level of competition.

Mental Toughness

Knowing how to deal with the successes and failures that will be faced as a pitcher may be one of the hardest things to overcome. Being able to have a short term memory and knowing the only thing you need to focus on is who is at the plate right now will lead to greater success then what has been seen in the past. Getting over a recent home run or a double off the wall will lead you to be able to know how to deal with the next hitter and how to move on.
