Calendars essentially evolved as organizational tools. As society became more complex, it was more convenient if days, week, months and years were coordinated. Different cultures created their own calendars, not all of them based on the same thing. For the most part, calendar and date-keeping systems evolved as either solar-based or lunar-based. Primitive man was able to notice and track the longest and shortest days of sunlight in the yearly cycle and those became some of the first holidays celebrated.

In modern times, calendars are a necessity for many people, helping to sort out which days we work from which days we don't, reminding us of important dates that would be best not forgotten  and they still work to organize large social and religious holidays.

When Does Your Year Start?

Gregorian calendar - most of the world operates on this calendar, which marks the New Year as starting on January 1st.

Chinese New Year - also called the Lunar New Year.  This happens in January or early February, and falls on the first day of the first month according to the Chinese calendar.  In 2010 this date is February 14, 2010.

Jewish New Year - the Jewish calendar is also lunar-based and the New Year occurs in autumn.  The holiday is called Rosh Hashanah and happens on the first day of the month of Tishrei.  In 2009, it starts at sundown on September 18 and begins the Jewish year 5770.

Pagan/Wiccan New Year - the holiday of Samhain, which takes place on October 31st is when Neo-Pagans and Wiccans mark the turn of the wheel.

Do You Mark Off Days?

Do you mark off individual days on your calendar as they pass?

  • I like to put a diagonal line across days that are done.
  • I'm one of those people who puts an X through days as they pass.
  • Nope, I do just fine without crossing off days.

How To Make The Most Of Your Wall Calendar

I tend to favor wall calendars as they can't get buried under stuff on my desk, they add a bit of art to wherever I hang them, and they work just by looking up at them when I'm on the phone. There are a few calendars in my house, but the most important one is probably the one in the kitchen, as that's how multiple housemates get organized and keep note of things.

When you first get a new calendar, sit down with it and the previous year's calendar. Go through month by month and add any important dates that aren't noted holidays or events. Most often this is personal birthdays and anniversaries.

If you have household tasks, chores or repairs that need to be done at regular or irregular intervals, noting them down on your calendar is a good idea.

Tracking when certain plants or flowers in your yard bloom. This makes your calendar into a personal almanac.

When your calendar year comes to an end, consider saving your calendar instead of throwing it away. If you write down a lot of things on a calendar, it then becomes a sort of personal diary, letting you look back on a specific year in your life.
