I will vote for Gmail. and i will try to show some reasons:
Gmail offers:
1. 7GigaByte+ Space and it is increasing
2. Gmail has POP3/IMAP support, so that you can download emails using outlook,outlook express, eudora , thunderbird or any other email client
3. Gmail can retrieve email from other email accounts(say your ISP/office email address), if they support POP3 access
4. Gmail can automatically forward your email to another email adress
5. Gmail can send email disguising as your old email account, hence very useful for migration purposes.
6. Gmail can import email address from outlook express/thunderbird easily
7. and finally, having a gmail account means having a Google account automatically, which means you gain membership into Picasa, Blogger, Youtube and many more services, as well as enhanced search experience with Google web search

I also like Gmail because you will probably never have to delete anything if you don't want to. It is also nice because it allows you to search for email received. You can also protect priceless photographs by saving them in Picassa on the Gmail server. If your computer crashes, your pictures are safe. It's great to have access to Picassa to create your own albums as well.
