Since 1998, I have known how to create webpages and to this day I still play around with them. I have never gotten bored with it either. I've had all different kinds of webhosting over the years with many different domain names behind me.  I have had everything from free all the way up to a reseller account.  I currently have a reseller account where I can host other people on my own account with their own control panel.

What To Look For From Your Host

You really have to look into a lot of things before you choose your host.   You do not always know how the service is before you even try it.  If you can find one that is month to month, that is the best for when you are starting out.  Some of them even have a money back guaranty so those are the best to try.

Some things you really need to know outside of price is this:

  • What is their uptime?  You want something at around 90 percent.  Most offer 99.9%
  • How much space are they giving you when it comes to hard drive and bandwidth?
  • What are their terms of service?  You would hate to go with someone to find out what you are trying to do is against their rules.

What Kind of Hosting that is available

  • shared
  • reseller - This is usually on a shared host, but also can be on a dedicated server too.
  • Virtual Private Server - You have your own section of a server and have root access to your section.
  • Dedicated server - The server is all yours with root access.

Most people usually go with a shared server when starting out and not all hosting companies have everything.  The one I currently have does not have a vps which is the virtual private server.

Hostgator offers unlimited domains, at least that's what it says in the advertising. In your experience, would you know how many domains that really is in practice?

It depends on how much space you are using through them altogether. I use their reseller packages, but I used to have their shared packages. The thing that you need to know is that your limited to 50,000 inodes but I think you can go as much as 250,000 inodes. inodes are files.

Well, I have got about 3000+ inodes spread across 3 sites and I think 1 main site is taking up most of the space. So I think it looks like it's going to be quite a few more sites before I need to upgrade or something. Thanks! :)
