The Bhojpuri Language

The Bhojpuri language is part of the Eastern-Hindi or Begali continuum of languages which once exended from Assam and Begal to Benares.  While the rest of Bihar and UP slowly adopted the new Hindi standard, the language remained strong in the areas between Patna and Benares.  But now the government of India is preparing to grant it statutory status as a national scheduled language.  They are part of the Eastern Zone group of Indo-Aryan languages which includes Bengali and Oriya. It means that if government of India grants Bhojpuri the status of language which is in process it will become third most spoken language in India after Hindi and Bengali.  Today, many Indians in the West Indies, Oceania, and South America still speak Bhojpuri as a native or second language.  The Bhojpuri language has been heavily influenced by other languages in many parts of the world.  In Kathmandu, Music FM broadcasts Bhojpuri songs and some daily programmes in this language.  Although the Bhojpuri has been introduced recently as one of alternative languages in some of Bihar and UP Universities and this will have far reaching impact in evolution of this dialect into a language.

Bhojpuri Films

In Bollywood films, all the languages spoken in the villages of UP, Bihar, South Nepal, and North Jharkhand are often collectively referred to as Bhojpuri.  Sticking to home-grown Indian family melodramas and throwing in some glamorous faces and slick foreign locations for a contemporary feel, Bhojpuri films are often outperforming Bollywood biopics at the box office these days.  "Most Bhojpuri films are made on small budget of usually $50,000 to $60,000 and usually gross 10 times their costs at the box office, which is much higher than any Bollywood hit," Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh says.  Other actors who have appeared in or are about to appear in Bhojpuri films are Ajay Devgan, Juhi Chawla, Raj Babbar, Rati Agnihotri and starlet Nagma.  Indian actor Ravi Kishan, widely known as ‘Bhojpuri Amitabh Bachhan’, is entering into Nepali films with the movie ‘Sathi Re’ and the surprising part is  he is not taking any project amount.  The young man Ayub Khan, who could not entice the moviegoers with his acting prowess in Hindi films turned his face to the small industry where he clicked with a rocking pill making a special home in viewers' hearts, is making his debut in a Bhojpuri movie as a leading protagonist.
