Does the idea of becoming one of the many bichon frise breeders in your country sound appealing to you? If it does, there are important things you need to consider before you become a breeder. For instance, it is not only a matter of understanding the whole bichon breeding process, and learning how to take care of a mother and her young puppies, it is also about committing yourself to safe and healthy practices that make for a reputable breeding program.

The following are some of the important aspects you need to consider if you want to join bichon frise breeders in reproducing this beautiful canine:

  • Know everything that is involved in the breeding process. Learn about how you breed the dogs, how long pregnancy lasts for, the average number of pups per litter, and what to expect before, during and after labor.
  • Consult with your veterinarian. Tell your vet about your plans to breed, and ask them for advice. It is important that you keep in close contact with your vet, as you may require their assistance if there is a problem during labor and delivery. In example, there are times when complications occur and a cesarean section will be necessary. Moreover, you will need to take the new pups to be checked out a few days after they are born.
  • Know what an expected mother requires. Bichon frise breeders know that when a dog is pregnant, her nutrition needs change, and her health must be routinely monitored. She will require a whelping box, and other items will be needed to prepare for the grand event including fresh, clean towels, newspaper, etc.
  • Is your home large enough to support your breeding plans? Do you have enough space both indoors and outside to comfortably accommodate a bichon mother and her litter? What about if you don't sell your dogs or a client returns a dog to you? Will you be able to support and show responsibility for the pooches you bring into this world?
  • Can you cover the expenses of breeding? You may think that the money you make from selling puppies will cover your costs, but this is untrue. Think about it, aside from the grown dogs you may have in your home, are you prepared to financially care for 4 or more puppies by providing them with food, vet care, toys and any other necessity they may require before they are sold. Furthermore, selling is a whole other story. What type of advertisements will you have? If you are unsuccessful and are not able to sell all of the pups, will you be able to provide for them?
  • What dogs will you be using in your breeding program? If you want to be known as one of the reputable bichon frise breeders, you need to ensure that the sire and dam bichons you mate have a strong and healthy pedigree. The dogs should also be registered with the kennel club and the breed club of your nation.

As you can see, bichon frise breeders are responsible for a lot, and need to take their breeding business seriously. It is in your best interest not to become involved in this business if you are not sure you can devote the necessary time, or afford such responsibility.
