Bichon Frise Mitzi

Bichon frise puppies are very adorable white puffs. However, beneath all of their fluff is a dog that requires a long term commitment of love and care that doesn't come cheap. Owning a dog is a huge responsibility, so before you get sucked into the puppy dog eyes of a bichon, find out what this dog is all about and know what you are getting yourself into.

To give you an idea of what it means to own bichon frise puppies, the following are a few tidbits about the breed:

Their coats shed little and are low-allergen, but require frequent grooming - Bichons are a great choice for a dog lover who is prone to allergies. However, the downside to this type of coat is that it is high maintenance. Your puppy will require daily grooming, as well as monthly baths and hair clippings. Their hair is prone to knots and easily soils because it is white. Furthermore, he is susceptible to tear stain. This is a type of discharge that seeps from the eye and can stain the fur under the eyes a dark reddish-brown. Thus, this will also need to be looked after.

Happy in any living space but outdoor exercise is still a must - Bichon frise puppies are indeed the perfect dog choice for any dwelling. Though he likes backyards to romp around in, he is just as happy playing indoors and releases most of his energy inside. However, to maintain optimal health, he should still be taken for two, 10 -15 minute walks daily.

Good with children but every dog has their breaking point - Your pup will love to play with kids, but children need to know how to handle and play with the dog. They should also be supervised, to ensure both they and the pet play safely and happily. A bichon will snap at a child if overly teased or abused.

Very sociable but can develop shyness if not provided with the right socialization - The frise is known for his friendly and loveable nature. That being said, if you want a highly sociable dog, you need to provide him with the right socializing opportunities when he is a puppy, or he could end up becoming shy.

Wonderful watchdog and quite the noise maker - You will quickly discover that bichon frise puppies like to bark and will alert you to anyone at your dog. However, if barking is not controlled, he can also drive you barking mad.

The best companion you could ask for, but very lonely without you - The bichon-frise loves being with his family, but does not do well on his own and can suffer severe separation anxiety. Therefore, if the dog will be by himself for most of the day, consider getting another pooch to keep him company, or hiring a pet sitter.

Training is a chore - This breed is stubborn and slow to learn, especially when it comes to housebreaking. You will need to provide firm, gentle, persistent and consistent training.

Understand, the above pros and cons about bichon frise puppies is not meant to deter you from choosing this breed, it is to help you realize that there is more to owning a dog than simply buying a pet. Great dogs are not born; they develop greatness through the care and teachings of their owner.
