The Basic Quests of Man

Since time immemorial mankind has been obsessed with two undying quests:

First: To know about the future (predicting the unknown)

Second: How to make Gold (get rich quick)

Despite all the advent and innovation in Science and technology we have not succeeded in fulfilling either of these quests.

Then there is this old economic theory that “demand generates the supply”. Responding to this huge demand for producing gold or to predict future so many have tried to fool the people, using so many different gimmickries, and surprisingly few of them had their sway for quite some time, till the truth was exposed. On both these issues since no results could be produced in reality there is huge amount of hypocritical, sensitizing stories and nonsensical gossips around, for centuries.

The quest for Gold led to some useful developments like the evolution of chemistry science which has been so useful for our living. Similarly the quest for predicting the future has led us to study of astronomy. Other than these achievements, both these desires have only produced false news-paper head lines and business for those who could mould the opinions of few seekers to their baseless tall claims for a certain period of the spell.

Whole industry of Predictions

There is this whole industry around prediction. Few like the astrologers, palmists, star gazers, crystal ball gazers, horoscope readers, numerologists etc cater to the market segment of human beings. Despite their tall claims they have never been able to predict any of the major incidents like assassination of President Kennedy, Rajeev Gandhi or for that matter the whole family of Nepal Royalty who had a royal astrologer as well.

Another group focuses on the segment of the planet earth. They have done so in the past as well predicting the end of the world due to ice age. One of the most celebrated of these has been Michel de Nostredame, also known as Nostradamus, who was a 16th-century physician in France. He wrote these prophecies as quatrains, or four-line verses, which like any poetry, are difficult to understand and whose meaning can be interpreted in hundreds of different ways. His followers claim that he predicted the rise of Hitler, the Apollo moon landing and the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 but all have been the after event interpretation. Did any one tell US president about Nostradamus’s prediction about Sept. 11, 2001, before hand, of course not, but after ward some verse could always be fitted to be indicating at this. So this is how it has been going on.

In fact there are so many lists of failed dooms day predictions now, yet the madness goes on. If doomsayers were to be believed, now the predicted nuclear wars could have destroyed the earth many times over.

No Doomsday Ever, Each day is a Life Time

No Doomsday Ever, Each day is a Life Time
No Doomsday Ever, Each day is a Life Time

World is coming to and end in …..

World is coming to and end in ….. has become a never ending format of such stories. You just fill a year in the blank and add some baseless logic to it. The logic could be based on prediction of some astrologer, historical civilization or religious movement. Few movements of the past have been so strong that their followers have sold their belongings and have gathered on the predicted date at one destined place and committed group suicides. Only if they had known about such unfulfilling nature of these quests of mankind, and possibility of foul play by some strongly orientated motivator to be taking advantage of such quests.

Many scholars see this theory as extremists trying to cash in on the fears of others. This theme of world is coming to an end is so popular among the story mongers that whole books have been written about and those books have become even the best sellers, but their predicted dates have past and the world is flourishing as ever.

Mayan's "Long Count" calendar & world’ end on Dec. 21, 2012

So this time the dooms day brigade on world’s end has based their falsification on Maya calendar. As a great civilization the evolution of society in Mayan age deserve great respect. But more respect must be reserved for continuous revelation of new truth and innovations. Thus to base a prediction on a calendar that had months of 20 days and year of 260 days where the 260 days year was mandated based on the pregnancy period of women. They thought the moon cycle to be of 13 days as other days moon could not be sighted. Based on such a calendar these future extremist are nursing their new story of dooms day in 2012.

Even if we consider the Mayan calendar to be the most accurate and scientifically ratified calendar then it must be noted that the Mayans themselves don't actually believe that the world is going to end at the end of this cycle. In fact, they believe that it's a time of great celebration and luck when the planet lasts through a full Great Cycle. After all, in the past mankind has already made it safely through three other Great Cycles, and the world is still a vibrant place for us all.

The Joke of our Era

University of Florida anthropologist Susan Gillespie says the 2012 phenomenon comes "from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own." Take heart as there are scientists who while saying that all good things must come to an end sometime, also give us a little time to breath when they predict: at best we've got no more than half a billion years left. So half a billion years is definitely much more than the three years given by these Mayan theory extremists.

Thus world coming to an end in 2012 is perhaps the biggest joke of our era. Those who get it will laugh it off and those who don’t will get serious and buy those unscrupulous books on this topic, read them, get frustrated, depressed and keep dying till 21st December 2012, yet still survive the falsehood as it is. I request them to wake up on the beautiful morning of 22nd December 2012 and read this hub once again and wonder why did they not get this joke!!!!!!! Since on the theme of prediction I feel like indulging too. So here goes my prediction: 21st December 2012 will be like any other day, the day will pass with no major event happening at all. It would have had garnered huge press head lines the previous day, though, which you will be reading on the morning of 21st. I for sure know that I will not have to modify even a single letter on this hub on 22nd December 2012.

AcNOW to steer you away from all doomsayers

Conclusion

On a serious note the Mayan calendar if taken in its right spirit was man’s desire to know, understand and manage Time. From this point of view its is such an important piece of history, as with what ever little knowledge they had about their surroundings they used it to understand and Manage Time. The Management of time has been evolving since then and is still evolving. This is why the concepts of Time Management in Book “No Such Thing as Time” become so relevant and need of the hour. Here the true nature of Time is discussed and a methodology is developed to master the management of Life thru the principle of AcNOW®.

Great article and great subject.

My calendar only goes to January 2010. Does that mean that the world will end then?
