Uses for Your Coffee Beans
- Breath Freshener - Ever run out of breath mints? If you are in a pinch, just pop a coffee bean in your mouth for a few minutes and soon your breath will smell clean and fresh again.
- Remove foul odor from hands – Ever prepare foods with garlic, fish or other foods with strong odors? To help get the scent off of your hands, a few coffee beans may be all you need. Put a few coffee beans in your hands and rub them together. The oils from the coffee beans will absorb and neutralize the smell. When the odor is gone, wash your hands normally.
- Beanbag Filler- Where do you think the name “bean bag” came from? Coffee beans are great for filling bean bags but, with the prices of certain coffees being a bit higher than others, make sure to look for a sale and then buy the lowest priced coffee you can find.
- Coffee grounds are a great odor neutralizer. For example, if a power outage occurred & the food in the freezer defrosts & spoils, simply fill a bowl or two with coffee grounds (preferably used, so you don’t waste them) & leave in the freezer over night to remove any foul odors.
- Coffee grounds are a big help in cleaning/sweeping out open fireplaces. The trick is to sprinkle used coffee grounds over the hearth of the fireplace or wherever the ashes are & it will be much easier to sweep up. It will also help stop the coal dust from floating up in your room.
- Coffee grounds work well as compost and as an insect repellant. Add some coffee grounds to your seeds or soil before sowing; not only will this make the seeds easier to sow, the smell also repels root maggots & other pests allowing for healthier fruits, vegetables, and plants.
- Coffee grounds are extremely effective at keeping cats from using your garden as a toilet. To solve this nasty little problem, combine used coffee grounds & grated orange peel. Take the coffee grounds, orange peel mixture and sprinkle it around your plants, flower beds; anywhere you want to keep the “kitties” away from. The mixture creates a scent that cats do not care, resulting in “kitty-free” gardens & flower beds.
- Coffee grounds can be used as a deterrent against ants. Put used coffee grounds onto any ant hills you can find. You will have to do this for each hill because this won’t kill the ants, but it will make them move.
- Fishermen, when transporting maggots & worms put them in a container with moist coffee grounds. The coffee grounds make the maggots and worms easier to pick up when you need them.
- Coffee grounds are wonderful for foul smelling kitchen drains. A simple solution is to get a cup of used coffee grounds and pour them down the drain followed by a slowly poured pot of boiling water. Once this is done, leave the grounds and boiling water to do its work and freshen the drain.
- Coffee grounds can be used to clean any stain resistant surface, it has a mild & gentle abrasive element & smells fresh too, particularly good for smelly ashtrays and greasy surfaces.
- To help plants grow and flourish, add coffee to your soil. It is best if this is done in small amounts of soil when possible so you can add a cup of lime juice to balance the acidity. If you want to avoid using the lime juice, be sure to use coffee grounds that have already been used as this lowers the acidity of the grounds. Another “green” way is to empty the used grounds right onto your compost pile with other kitchen waste.

Thank you for the comment. I don't get to fish much here in California, but I certainly want to hear your results. Just make sure the worms don't get too much of the coffee or they might writhe so much you might not be able to get them on the hook !
I can't wait to try this for repelling cats out of the garden in our yard! They are continually digging up my lettuce. Not sure if it is just the neighbor cats or also the squirrels. Will try your repellent in any case.
These are fantastic ideas! Thanks for sharing.

Out of all of your uses, I have to say, the fishing one is the most unique. I can't say I have ever heard of that. I go fishing out here in Tennessee a lot. I will have to try that out. Thanks for the tips.
