Skype is a type of software that allows both for instant messenger and phone calls to take place between people.  Similar to how voice calling works on Yahoo and AIM, Skype offers both free and paid versions of the program to call landline phones or other Skype users.  File transfers, video conferencing and other features are also built-in to the software.

Skype Out gives users the opportunity to call traditional, landline phone numbers.  Without a payment plan, it costs 24 cents per minute in the US and other countries to make and receive calls.  You can also purchase phone plans via Skype on a monthly basis to counteract those costs.  Depending on the Internet service you have, along with your connection, you may not get the best calling service through Skype.

In order to use the Skype service, you have to download the software and have some form of microphone with your computer.  This can be built-in or a peripheral, but without one, you will not be able to communicate with who you are talking to other than instant messaging.  You can use your speakers to hear, but you can also use a headset with a built-in microphone for more privacy.  No matter which way you go with using Skype, there are ways to use it for everyone.

Skype is an alternative to investing in a VOIP program via your Internet, but it is not as reliable as VOIP or a standard landline.  You cannot dial 911 with Skype nor can you get away with making a lot of calls without spending a lot more money than you bargained for.  Without a solid plan with Skype, you may end up in debt from using the service.  However, if you are looking for an easy way to make calls with those over the Internet, Skype offers an alternative that might work for you.
