Good teeth is very important not only for humans but for cats as well. Cats are actually prone to tartar build up, gum disease, and cavities just like us. These can be severely painful to your cat without you ever knowing causing your dog to be unhappy. To ensure that your cat doesnt develop these dental problems you will need to start brushing his teeth. This is no easy process. You have to go about it carefully so your cat will let you brush his or her teeth repeatedly. There are 10 simple steps that will ensure successful brushing and a happy cat.

Step 1

Before you start brushing take your cat to the vet to make sure that he doesnt have gum disease of cavities. If he or she has either of these and you try to start brushing their teeth it will be painful. They will then associate tooth brushes with pain.

Step 2

You will need to get your cat comfortable with you opening his mouth. This is important because you will have to open his mouth with your hands to brush his teeth. To do this gradually open his more and more.

Step 3

Go out to your local petstore and buy a dental kit. They make tooth brushes adn tooth paste specifially for cats. The kit will come with a list of easy instructions telling you the basics and some precautions to take while brushing.

Step 4

Find a comfortable place for your cat to sit while you are brushing his teeth. You will also need to wrap him in a towel to prevent him from jumping or moving.

Step 5

Open your cats mouth and hold his body with minimal restraint. By holding him forceful he might feel like you are attacking him and get defensive.

Step 6

Begin to brush their teeth by using a gentle, massaging motion.

Step 7

Brush for 2 to 4 minutes gradually increasing the brusing pressure. If your cat starts showing signs of discomfort brush softer.

Step 8

Take a tooth brush with no paste on it and get it wet. Brush his teeth with this brush to remove the tooth paste.

Step 9

Fill up a bowl of water for your cat to drink. He will probaly want to wash the taste out of his mouth

Step 10

To reward your cat for this be very nuturing afterwards.

In time brushing your cats teeth will become easier and easier. Cats dont have as much problems with teeth as dogs because they dont chew as much. But you still need to make sure they have clean teeth. Good luck brushing your cats teeth!
