Advice for Filipino Nurses

IT was published in PinoyMoneytalk.com- dated July 9, 2008 that the demand for Filipino Nurses abroad is decreasing. It is likely that your rosy dream of landing a job abroad will get frustrated. Why? According to the Philippine Nursing Association (PNA) - the global demand for licensed Filipino nurses has been consistently decreasing since 2004.

The PNA cited 3 factors: (1) countries hiring Filipino nurses have changed their hiring policies. In this connection- the United States is currently implementing visa retrogression while the United Kingdom is starting to rely on their local health workers; (2) over-supply of nurses. The supply of Filipino nurses has already filled-up the demands; (3) deteriorating quality of nursing graduates. Fly-by-Night nursing schools and "short-cut nursing programs" contribute to the weakening of the quality and attractiveness of Filpino nurses.

If Filipino nurses have slim chances of landing jobs abroad - can they just stay put and find for themselves employment locally? Easier said than done. The truth is finding nursing work in the Philippines may not be that easy anymore. According to the same PNA data- the demand for nurses here in the Philippines has remained stagnant for the last 2 years.

So if fresh Filipino nurses can't find work overseas and likewise can't find suitable employment here in the Philippines- what are they supposed to do?  Truly- they're in a dilemma.

With these facts presented before you, what is your final decision?

  • Enrol and study nursing. It's the course I'll be happy with.
  • Enrol in nursing because my friends are there, besides it's the choice of my parents.
  • Choose other course that will help me earn a decent living in the near future.
  • Shift to other course.
  • Teach myself other business where I could be my own boss.

FOR fresh high school graduates who are intending and have the opportunity to pursue college- choose a career which is suited to your taste, idiosyncracies and personality. Select a course which is not too crowded. A word of advice to unemployed Filipino nurses, take short and crash vocational courses offered by TESDA. Prefer livelihood business endeavors where profits are all yours and no one to share with. I mean indulge in a career where you've no bosses- no masters but yourself. By any means, try to secure a working capital no matter how small it is to start your business with. And - remember - protect that capital and let it grow. Yes- let it grow and grow. Never spend a single centavo of that capital while your business is still young.
