buffleheads, merganser and coots
60Alsea bay, Waldport, Oregon
My family and I went on a short trip to the Oregon Coast. We stayed down in the Waldport area. The first day in Waldport, we walked out along Alsea Bay. The Bay area is teaming with wildlife. We were on the south side of the bay. Looking over on the North shore, I thought I saw a lot of rocks, and then I noticed one moving, then another. It was harbor seals sunning themselves on the beach! The harbor seals were in the water, watching us as we made our trek into the bay. I was seeing gulls and crows all over the sand where the water has gone out during low tide. I started feeling disappointed; the bay was supposed to be an excellent bird watching zone. I saw a couple of mallards mixed in with the gulls, and kept walking towards the docks. The Port of Alsea was a surprising birding treasure trove! I got pictures of a female bufflehead and a male bufflehead swimming in the bay. There was a duck in the bay I snapped pictures of, not knowing what it was until I got back to the hotel and looked at the pictures closer. The pictures were of a Red-Breasted Merganser! I have never seen one before, the Merganser is sure a crazy looking bird, looks like someone just got out of bed and didn’t brush its hair yet! We also came across 4 American Coots, which as we walked onto the docks, scared them back out into the water. We didn’t mean to scare the coots, just wanted to get a closer shot. There are other birds and beautiful views we took in on our excursion. So all in all, the trip down to Alsea Bay, down to the Port of Alsea was a fulfilling bird watching trip. I cannot wait to go visit again and see what else hangs around down by the docks!
