Building Self Esteem in Your Child
51Helping To Build Your Childs Self Esteem
Parenting can be tough, very tough. Nevertheless, it is so full of rewards that it is well worth it. Children will push you and test you. They will misbehave and break the rules. They test us as parents and steal our hearts. As parents, it is our responsibility to help build our children’s self-esteem. We encourage their success and help them gain confidence to help them lead successful, productive lives. Basically, all parents express a desire to instill good, positive self-esteem in their children, but many lack the parenting skills necessary to achieve that goal. Many parents simply do not know how to go about helping their child or children build self-confidence.
When a parent steps into the role of confidence builder for their children, they often have difficulty in creating an environment that is conducive to such endeavors. It is so difficult for some parents to let go of their children that stifle their children, hold them back and, in some cases, even damage their children’s self-esteem. This is usually not intentional, but the effects can last through the child’s life. If a child lacks self-confidence and the parent or parents do things that instill that further, even inadvertently, the damage can last well into adulthood. Low self-esteem can affect performance in school, relationships with friends and later, problems in the workplace or in seeking a job.So what can parents do to instill self-esteem in their child? There are no easy answers, but the first step a parent can do to build self-esteem in their child is to let go. This does not mean abandon the child, is simply means allow the child to make some of his or her own decisions. A primary reason that many parents are apprehensive in giving their children any freedom or control over their lives is that the parent actually lacks self-esteem. Low self-esteem is not hereditary genetically, but it is passed on from parent to child. Children learn what they live and parents who project negative self-images teach their children to do the same thing. Even if the parents try to promote high self-esteem in their child, it may not be enough. A large part of parenting is teaching by example. Sure, you have your lessons and rules, but it is what you don’t say to your kids that speaks volumes.
Give your children room – and permission – to fail. Failure is a fact of life. But a child is never allowed to fail if he or she is never allowed to strike out on his or her own. A parent can begin encourage sound decision making in children when they are infants, before they can even talk. When you are purchasing an outfit for your baby, make two selections. Hold up both outfits and ask, “Do you like the blue one better, or the yellow one?” Whichever outfit the baby looks at the most or the longest, choose it, put the other away and say, “Oh! You like the blue one? Me too!” Put it in your basket and purchase it. When you give children the freedom to make their own decisions and they know that you trust them, they are not likely to stray.
It is a matter of independence. Be a parent, but allow your child to make certain decisions alone. You can set reasonable boundaries, but give in a little and compromise. Encourage your child to make choices and walk him or her through the consequences of the choice. When a child misbehaves it is important that he or she realize and acknowledge that not only did they make the choice to commit the offense, they also made the choice to accept the consequences associated with the offense.

- Happy Kids, Happy Holidays
The Holidays are a time of joy, peace, and love--right? Even though that is the way it should be, often foster and adoptive families find themselves dreading the season because of the way their children react to it. Even though that is the way it should be, often foster and adoptive families find themselves dreading the season because of the way their children react to it. Kids who have been neglected or abused or who have Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or ADHD, many times experience the month of December with a feeling of anxiety or even anger, making their behaviors worse than ever. Is there hope for foster and adoptive families at Christmas? Is there a way to discipline that will actually get results? Can parents prepare for rough spots, and if so, how? Let’s look at discipline first… The definition of discipline is to teach. To teach effectively one must determine what is to be taught and then be adept and proven at providing such a lesson. I have found that we are quick to punish, condemn, or shame, but are challenged when it comes to providing true discipline–which is really training. True discipline requires far more flexibility, patience, and understanding than consequences, restrictions, and isolation.Often, behaviors arise because of misunderstanding or fear, and if a parent comprehends this, he can approach his child in a way that will truly train him. Of course, kids need boundaries–understanding the why behind the behavior doesn’t negate that fact–but they also need our time and input as the adults who love and support them most so that they can make the right choices. How often have we made the assumption that our child knew the right choice but he just wasn’t making it? In times of stress, a child of trauma regresses and may truly not know how to respond correctly. In the months of November and December we pile on the stress because of the traveling and extra activities we add to our schedules. No wonder our kids turn into monsters! Here are some tools for your parenting toolbox… 1. During misbehavior, give yourself time to breathe and think before you act. Ask some questions to determine what may be causing the behavior. Is your son tired? Did he have too much sugar? Has he had enough of you today? 2. If your child was traumatized, think about whether or not his behavior is a result of a trigger related to the trauma. If the answer is yes, see if you can eliminate the trigger and approach him with understanding. If he is old enough, you may even talk to him about it once he is calm so that in the future he may have some tools to prevent his negative reaction. 3. Avoid grounding and taking away toys and privileges–instead act out the right choice together when the situation has calmed. Embed the good choice into motor memory–making a lasting impression! This year, take a different approach if you are having trouble with your children’s behavior. After all, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Make understanding your new approach for the holiday season and watch true peace descend upon your household. It includes a stroller with a strong aluminum frame, a SnugRide32 infant car seat and an adjustable that stays in the car, and all three peices coordinate for style. The system’s pieces work together to allow you to move your baby in and out of the car in seconds. This system allows you to move the entire carseat without having to remove your baby. This is not a problem with Graco in particular, but an issue that many parents have with full sized travel systems altogether. Yet for most, the convenience and flexibility of having everything that is needed to get the baby from one place to another with little disturbance is well worth the extra weight. Many parents also find that the weight is not that big of a hassle since the stroller is designed to fold up with one hand. There is even a Sport model for parents with more active, fast paced lives. - Diaper Coupons -Save, Save, Save, You Want All You Can Get
Buying diapers is less costly when you use diaper coupons.Diaper coupons help with the price and requirement of buying diapers for your infant. Any mom will tell you there’s no better fragrance on God’s green earth than the sweet scent of a baby. Unless they are wearing a stinky, dirty nappy. And you just have to cover their little behinds. Hundreds, maybe thousands of diapers are changed each year before a toddler is finally potty-trained and the expense of so many can be overwhelming. Resources for diaper coupons are all over. Coupon inserts are in many local Sunday papers and many times will include diaper coupons. Stores like Target and Kmart sometimes have store-specific coupons on diapers and other infant items. Diaper coupons and other infant related offers are inserted in periodicals relating to parenting and raising children. Many internet sites offer diaper coupons. One particular website I like is 1diapercoupon.com . Huggies coupons and Pampers coupons are listed there and these are two of my favorite brands. Coupons for other brands of diapers which start off a little less costly are offered as well. Cloth diapers have made a modest comeback in the new “green” era but many moms still like betterthe easy, disposable route for covering their tiny infant’s bottom! Consider the many amenities of disposable diapers. Modern moms are always on the go all day long and must bring their pooper troopers with them. Cloth diapers don’t work when you are out and about all day long. And then, who really wants to add another, extremely messy load of laundry to the large piles already accumulating. Not to mention, disposable diapers are well, just that, disposable. In light of the recent economicchanges, every penny saved is welcome. You can purchase a higher priced brand using a diaper coupon when you might otherwise have to a buy less expensive brand. Or if you really have no choice, 1diapercoupon.com has less expensive brands offered as well. Diaper Coupons Come In Many Shapes & Colors, Collect As Many As You Can! Buying diapers is less costly when you use diaper coupons. Any mom will tell you there’s no better fragrance on God’s green earth than the sweet scent of a baby. Okay, make that a infant wearing a clean diaper and it’s definitely the best smell around. Infants have to have nappies; there’s no way around it. And diapers are expensive and needed for many, many months of a child’s first few years making them one of the most costly things about raising a child. There are many places to look for diaper coupons. Newspapers, especially the Sunday version, often have diaper coupons included in the inserts. Variety department stores print child-related coupons on the back of their sales receipts. Parenting and childhood magazines are full of promotions and coupons. The internet is also a good source for diaper coupons. 1diapercoupon.com is a specific website that offers discounts on diapers. This website includes offers for several things but top on my list are the Huggies coupons, Pampers coupons, and Luv’s coupons. As a purchaser of nappies, these three are among my favorites to use but they are generally a bit pricier so it’s also nice that the site offers coupons for other brands as well. To cover tiny bottoms in this new “everything must be green” world you might be shamed into using cloth nappies but don’t let them get to you; disposable diapers are still preferred by most contemporary moms. Throw away diapers offer many conveniences that cloth nappies don’t have. Modern moms are continously on the go all day long and must bring their pooper troopers with them. Lugging around wet, smelly, soiled, nappies is not a bother many of us are willing to go through. And there’s already sufficient laundry to do; who among us wants to wash those too? Not to mention, disposable diapers are well, just that, disposable. With today’s market the way it is every little bit of savings you can rally helps. You can purchase a superior priced brand using a diaper coupon when you might otherwise have to a buy cheaper brand. Or if you really have no choice, 1diapercoupon.com has cheaper brands offered as well. Thank you for reading our article, other coupons at: diaper coupons and huggies coupons
- Dealing With Drugs And Teenagers
Looking at drugs and teenagers, a thing that many parents may soon face or already have gone through. It's a tough thing, because you wonder what you did wrong, and why your kid has made this choice. For some the answer may be quite simple.Looking at drugs and teenagers, a thing that many parents may soon face or already have gone through. It’s a tough thing, because you wonder what you did wrong, and why your kid has made this choice. For some the answer may be quite simple. Drugs and teens are something that do not make a good combination. Because teens will not only use illegal drugs, but they will get into cold medicines and other things to get a buzz. Inhaling gas or other items just to feel that high. Talking is going to help, and rehab is another step that you may think of taking. But if your teen doesn’t want to quite, they won’t. Sure they may stop for a bit, but that want to do drugs will come back again, so you need to be strong and help them out. Smoking cigarettes is the same thing, as is drinking alcohol. If you do these things around you kids, do it moderately and always talk to them about it. Explain that when they get older they can do the same things, but not until then. If you have prescription drugs at home, hide them where your teen can’t find them. No matter what they are, see teens don’t always care what it is, as long as they have a chance to feel a buzz. Seeing if your teen’s behavior changes you may even need to look at their room. Teens that use drugs may hang out in their room a lot, or start to perform worse in school. But even a depressed teen may turn to drug use to get rid of pain. Getting your teen before it gets to be such a bad problem is a big help. One of the most important things to do though is to set the right example for your teens. Or kids of any age don’t use drugs around them. You shouldn’t be using drugs anyway, but many people do them, and it’s just what they feel is right. However, keep that away from your kids. Many parents out there may dabble in drug use, but if they keep it from their kids, they feel it’s ok. You know your teens are a lot smarter than you give them credit for, and they probably know you do the drugs. What will you do if your kid confronts you with something you don’t want them to do? Seth gives advice for families that need help with drugs and alcohol by showing the options such as the top boarding schools that your child can attend.
- If The Teaching’s Bad Kids Will Behave Badly!
If kids can't manage to learn in their lessons they can behave badly! If kids can’t manage to learn in their lessons they can behave badly! There are only 2 directions children can follow when they haven’t a clue what’s going on in class. They can’t read properly, so their chance of surviving in class is severely curtailed. The direction they follow is to become an increasingly troublesome behaviour problem. Their intelligence is used in a destructive way. These kids are clever, but grossly under-educated. They can’t use their brains to extend their knowledge because they haven’t got sufficient foundations to build on. They don’t have confidence in their abilities because their abilities have never been explored. It’s just assumed that because they fall behind in their work there must be something wrong with their level of intelligence. I have such a boy who’s just started in my classes… He’s out of control in mainstream school. He’s violenct, confrontational, foul mouthed. But school say he’s bright! How do they know? He can’t read properly or do basic arithmetic! He’s 10 but has the knowledge of a 7 year old… It’s amazing that they school aren’t questioning why this child, who they consider to be bright, is achieving at such a low level and why things are going so wrong. That doesn’t seem to cross their minds… It’s so much easier to blame the boy’s lack of achievement on his behaviour. It wouldn’t register to question what they may be doing wrong! This boy doesn’t lack intelligence but he’s not indicating this in school at present. The other children who can’t cope in class simply ‘wither away’ and almost become invisible. I met such a child… In a Year 3 class this little girl had a laptop with a maths game running. She had to use fractions to colour a flag, but it was obvious from the way she was randomly clicking on the shape that she hadn’t the first idea what it was about. She was close to tears when I asked her if I could help. What a shame to see a little kid so distressed. It became apparent that she didn’t even understand what a fraction was! But this little girl was bright.. within quite a short time she had understood the basic concept and was happily colouring her flags. What’s happening to little kids like this – out of their depth but certainly nothing wrong with their intelligence levels? Poor little things… So much paper work collected on children but what’s it used for if it isn’t indicating that they need help in certain areas, or that they’re doing well and need challenging to extend their knowledge. A few years ago I was called to a school to assist with a 5 year old whose behaviour had deteriorated alarmingly… I asked him to read to me which he did happily. His reading was exceptional but school had no idea what his reading ability indicated. They hadn’t done a reading age assessment but when they did it indicated he had reading age of a 10 year old. When they catered for this ability the behaviour problem disappeared! Amazing… If you’re faced with deteriorating behaviour think why this may be happening. Lack of behaviour management skills may be one reason but another may be poor teaching. Differentiation is a vital classroom management skill – put it into practise and you’ll remedy a lot of problems. jFostek,
I agree, self esteem is so very important for children, and freedom to fail as well as choice are important. I also know clear limits are important. My son is a master at pushing the limits and trying to negotiate his way out of everything. He's very tricky not just with me, but teachers and other students. Parenting can be difficult at times! But this hub is good because it makes us reflect on self-esteem and how very important it is. Thanks!
