What are Krills?
Krill is a crustacean resembling a shrimp but only 2.5 inches long weighting 2 grams. It is found in the Antarctic Ocean and feeds on phytoplankton floating on the water and is the favorite food of whales, seals, birds, penguins, and other marine species.
A break in the food chain, which is krill, could have catastrophic consequences in ecological terms. It is therefore a strategic element in the Antarctic biology, constituting perhaps one of the most important links in the food web. Of the 85 known species, the most widespread is the Euphausia Superba (also can look for Euphausia Superba oil), commonly known as Antarctic krill, one of the most abundant in the planet. It is estimated that in Antarctica, the total surface area distribution of the krill represents four times the area of Australia. For its abundance and containing a combination of known powerful antioxidant nutrients, scientists believe it can become one of the most important foods of the future. The various studies being conducted around the world are exposing the extraordinary nutritional and therapeutic properties of krill oil.

Krill - A Bioluminescent Animal
Except a few species of euphausiids, generic scientific name for krill, have a light producing organ (photophore) in the abdomen, a structure that allows them to emit light through a chemical reaction involving oxygen and several compounds called luciferin, luciferase and ATP (adenosine triphosphate). While not known why they have this bioluminescence capacity, some assumptions are that this capacity of krill helps them in attracting members of opposite sex for reproduction purposes, while others see it as a camouflage to compensate their shadow in order to avoid being recognized by their predators living in shallow waters.

Krill - An Abundant Species - Uses of Krill
The most common uses of krill include krill aquaculture, as bait in sport fishing, fish food in aquariums, and making diet products. In Japan, it is used as a food and is called "okiami", a famous ingredient used in soups, salads and starters. It is characterized by its salty and strong taste like a lobster. In the rest of the world, the use of krill is limited to its derivatives, such as oil, which is used as a nutritional supplement due to its medicinal and nutritional properties.
In Antarctic waters, the annual catch of this crustacean is about 100,000 tons and in Japan of about 70,000. Overfishing is regulated since 1993 by the "Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources" in order to ensure sustainability in the future. This tiny animal, the family of "Euphausiaceas", is one of the largest groups of the oceans. Its banks have reached a density of about 20 kilos per cubic meter of water. It is estimated that there are 90 species worldwide, and only the Antarctic krill have a biomass of between 50 and 150 million tonnes. It is believed that krill biomass is the largest in the world today and it could be between 220 and 440 million tons. The natural renewal of this biomass is made in a period of two years.
Among the most abundant species is the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and the North Pacific krill (Euphausia pacifica).

Indeed Krill oil is the only marine oil that combines omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and antioxidants, three major fundamental substances for human body to function properly and maintain or regain health.
Krill Oil Versus Fish Oil
Out of krill oils available in the market, Antarctic krill oil is more stable and more resistant than conventional fish oil, which means it lasts longer and does not oxidize in the body. Duration is 2 years out of the refrigerator and 4 years inside the refrigerator. Krill oil does not leave a fishy taste like common fish oil and there is no esophageal reflux that occurs with consuming krill oil softgels, krill oil capsules, or krill oil caplets.
So remember, a krill oil capsule a day keeps the doctor away because krill oil is 48 times better than fish oil.

Krill, small marine crustaceans, like shrimp, swimming in dense flocks, especially in Antarctic waters. Most of about 90 species that vary in length from 8 to 70 mm use their feathery legs to filter the tiny diatoms on which they feed, generally emit a powerful greenish blue light that probably helps them to assemble for spawn. Krill live in the open sea and is an important element of the food chain. It serves as food for fish, birds and especially the whales, which consume up to 2 tons of krill. The banks of these crustaceans have densities of 20 kg per cubic meter; some species remain close to the surface and further down to 2,000 m depth.
Because of Krill's enormous importance as a protein source, Japanese and Polish fleets fish for krill. Krill oil is famous for its medicinal properties. The thirteen members of the Antarctic Treaty have created an office based in Australia that has powers to limit catches.
Every year, baleen whales migrate to Antarctic waters to eat tons of krill. There are over 85 species of this small crustacean similar to shrimp. It is a good source of protein for their many predators, including humans, birds and fish.

Some more information on krills
In Antarctica, there have been remarkable scientific research among them include studies of glaciology, meteorology, geomagnetism, global climate control, seismology, and ionospheric physics. The nutrient-rich oceans around Antarctica are an important focus of research. Biologists have discovered that fish from Antarctic waters have a component of antifreeze in their blood that allows them to withstand temperatures below zero. Studies on the biological history of penguins, seals and krill (a potential food source for world) have provided new information on the ecology of these species. International studies have improved understanding of the reproduction of krill and have allowed scientists to improve their predictions of safe limits for the harvest of this animal.

Great hub Soni, I am familiar with krill however, I did not know that there was a health oil from that source. When I saw your hub I recalled my childhood when I was "sickly" and my parents always stuffed my mouth everyday with cod liver oil. OMG, I feel sick just talking about it. Since you say this is not fishy that should be beneficial to customers...
Yes the positive thing with using krill oil instead of using cod liver or fish oil is that it does not leaves a fishy taste in the mouth and there are no GERD symptoms.
Very informative hub. Thank you.

It's so funny Sonni, I just got through reading about the impact the loss of krill will have on the ecosystem - ten minutes ago, but I had no idea what medicinal value they had to offer us as mankind. From what I just read, krill is the basis of most Antarctic food chains, forming a vital food source for whales and seals, and penguins and other seabirds. When krill cease to exist; the whole balance of this food chain is drastically upset and altered. Thanks for this informative hub, I just might look into krill oil.
