Large Bird Cages
I had a co worker, that was so impressed with my birds and cages, she wanted to incorporate one into her tiny upstairs apartment to help fight off the winter blues. She lived over a used furniture store and browsed thur daily checking for antiques and anything she could recycle. A used china cabinet showed up one day, it was such a bargain she graped it for a very low price. She removed the shelves, polished the wood and it was ready for birds. She decided on small finches and song birds. I was very impressed! It made a beautiful bird cage when she finished decorating.
I on the other hand have African Grey Parrots. Anyone that knows anything about parrots know they like to chew. No frilly decoration for them. I went shopping through used furniture stores until I found a buffet. I needed a design to incorporated with my TV and stereo system. My house is very small and everything must serve dual purposes. I removed the doors and replaced them with plexiglass. I had to drill holes to place finger screw latches. Our three year old pet, Taz, figured out how to open every other latch and device I in stalled. Used refrigerator shelves were placed on the bottom to keep his feet clean and a metal rod was inserted where the shelf once was. The metal perch helps keep his toe nails trim. It's one less grooming fight we have to have. He pouts for awhile after I trim his wings. I do let him have a wooden stump I sterilized and dried good before allowing him to have. It's his second perch and toy. It's not nearly as pretty as the finch cage, but he loves it and I don't have to worry with winter drafts when my house door opens.
The Breeders like to be up high, so they got a closet in the middle of the house, with a hot water heater on the wall behind them. Just in-case the electric goes off it maintains heat for days. I replace the wooden door with plexiglas and fastened with bolt lock. The male like to dig in the pan an recycle his food so they don't have any grates on their floor. The closet wall was covered with a cheap grade formaca. Show stall paneling would work just as well. The nesting box and food rack is all one piece of sheet rock I had welded at the metal shop. I had about $200.00 invested in material about ten years ago. Not bad for a large bird cage. The blue curtain is for their privacy when they breed. They knock when they want it opened or closed or treat time. You can see on the left the molding has been chewed and it's the second molding I've replace. Next time I'm looking for metal. The chain is their ladder and they aren't into toys. They are to into each other.
