Camping Equipment - What to Do in Case of an Earthquake during an Outdoor Trip
61
Your whole family is having the time of their lives, eating, laughing, bonding, talking and doing fun and enjoyable camping trips. You think nothing can ruin the perfect day for all of you when you suddenly feel the ground is shaking and your kids' faces are all filled with fear.
Experiencing the ground shaking in tremors is always a frightening experience. Just imagine how more frightening it is when you are in the middle of the woods during a camping trip with your family. Even though chances of encountering an earthquake when you are right in the middle of your family camping trip are very slim, there is still nothing wrong with being prepared and knowing what do in case of such scenario.
Here is some useful information on how to be prepared in case an earthquake happens during an outdoor activity such as a camping trip:
1. Always be prepared. Never dismiss the possibility of an earthquake happening during your camping trip because you really never know when this natural disaster will strike. Be prepared but not to the extent that you will be paranoid. Make sure you also enjoy the trip.

2. Have an earthquake survival kit. Aside from important camping equipment, it is also best that you are always equipped with such kit that will prepare you in case of an unfortunate scenario of experiencing an earthquake.
3. Plan family emergency procedures. Educating the whole family about earthquake will equip them with proper knowledge on what to do in case of one. Do not hesitate to tell them that it is possible for an earthquake to happen during a camping trip. But assure them especially the kids that with proper preparation, you will all stay safe. This way, they will not be afraid or paranoid about the trip.

4. Know emergency telephone numbers such as the doctor, hospital, police, 911, or the campground authorities. But of course, you will have to bring a cell phone with you to the campsite. Otherwise, all these numbers will be futile unless there is a pay phone nearby, which is something you should not be too positive about.

5. Look for a safe spot to stay in during the earthquake. Stay under a table or inside the vehicle. Stay away from trees or heavy objects that may fall off.
6. Stay together. Make sure that the whole family is complete and that no one is missing. Stay together in the safe place and do not let anyone stray away until you are completely sure that the earthquake as well as the aftershocks is over.
There is nothing you can do to stop an earthquake from happening but you can certainly undertake these steps to ensure that you and your family are well-prepared for it.

Interesting topic - earthquakes definitly aren't something I think many people ever think about when planning their camping trips. I suppose being aware of "where" you setup camp could be helpful too. Setting that tent at the base of a potential landslide should probably be avoided too.
