A couple of decades ago, camping gear was pretty crude and basic. You had small tents that weren’t very waterproof and had only one room, camping stoves that were both heavy and dangerous, and flashlights that would fail if you dropped them or accidentally left them out in the morning dew.

One of the most important innovations for campers is the GPS, or global positioning system. Years ago, campers had to carry maps and compasses, and mark their trails carefully to avoid getting lost in the woods. These days, a GPS can be used even in many remote locations to keep track of your position and help you find your way back if you get lost. They’re also very small and lightweight.

• A first aid kit is very important. You’ll at least need bandages, tape, scissors, antiseptic, burn ointment, a headache remedy, fever reducers, and some sort of allergy remedy in case of emergencies.
• Don’t forget any of your family’s medical necessities. Bring prescription medications, inhalers, blood sugar monitors, or anything else your family uses on a regular basis.
• Bring a GPS if you can. Getting lost can be very dangerous!
• Bring enough lighting. Bring waterproof flashlights and lanterns, preferably those that can be recharged by shaking or cranking.
• Fishing or hunting supplies are also a good idea in case you do get stranded and run out of food.
• Don’t forget about your family’s sanitary needs. Bring things such as toilet paper, antibacterial hand soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and sanitary napkins for women.

Depending on your situation and your family’s needs, there may be other items you feel are essential. Some people wouldn’t dream of leaving home without their laptop and cellular air card so they can access the Internet.

Some people need to remember to bring along the family pet. Still others can’t live for an hour without their MP3 player! But as long as you bring the essentials, you’ll be able to survive long enough to enjoy your trip, even if you do forget your portable DVD player.
