Underwriting requirements with Mitral valve prolapse

I had a gentleman I was working with today that has Mitral valve prolapse.   His doctor found it at one of his recent physical exams.  This can be a very common condition and his doctor told him not to be too alarmed.  He called it a leaky heart valve.  The main issue is that the heart has to eventually work harder to pump this extra blood.  To be thoroughly diagnosed having an echo-cardiogram is necessary.

He wanted to get a plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and since he was going to be self-employed now and was losing health insurance from his old employer.   I gave him a break down of what the underwriters look and and at this we figured we had the green light to submit his application online.  In general what we have found is that most people will be accepted if they have Mitral Valve prolapse (MVP) if :

  1. no murmur and no current medication, other than preventive antibiotics
  2. click or murmur grade 1-2 only.
  3. if treated with medication (other than preventive antibiotics) but no symptoms for at least 6 months

If you have the above symptoms with Mitral valve Prolapse consider your self eligible for health insurance with most major carriers like BCBSIL, Humana, Aetna and United Health Care.

You must remember that if you have other medical conditions along with MVP such as hypertension, smoking or obesity(keep your BMI under 30) this may result in a decline.
