It took me a long time to consider taking my family on a Narrow Boat holiday here in Great Britain, I mean we don't get the best weather, even during the summertime, but last year I did just that.

If you take a moment to look into it you will quickly find out that that nowadays the narrow boats are modern, warm, roomy and well equipped as well as being easy to handle, so you dont need any seafarin' experience to take the helm.

The appeal of a narrow boat holiday comes not from its simplicity, but rather the totally relaxed experience of drifting quietly along the waterways amidst the unspoilt British countryside drawing in the fresh air and peacefulness while occasionally stopping for lunch at a traditional waterside restaurant, or enjoying a cooked breakfast in the glittering morning sunshine before visiting a stately home or even a theme park along your chosen route.

And theres no need to worry about where to hire your boat, there are many hire firms across the UK that cater to this thriving market, so you are sure to find the right boat for you and your party, no matter how large or small. When we booked we went with hoseasons and the whole process was straightforward and worry free.

Typically your boat will come equipped with all mod cons; central heating is provided (because you just never know with the British weather); the kitchen is equipped enough to cook a Sunday roast and the lounge area is large enough for the family to sit down at the end of the day and catch up on your favourite TV shows.

The bathrooms are clean and well appointed, usually consisting of a toilet, basin and a shower (but you can also get a bath), and they are always cleaned ready for your arrival.

When your holiday begins you are bound only only by the hand picked starting location, you'll be met by a guide who will show how to operate the boat and fill you in on standard canal boat etiquette and from there its up to you where to go next as you explore miles and miles of British waterways set amidst acres of countryside.

If fishing is your thing then simply moor up your boat and cast your rod overboard. It really is the holiday with ultimate flexibility built in - you choose where you want to go and how far you want to travel.
