Some of us have problems falling asleep. Trust me, I had my times when I just can't fall asleep. I'm not a sleeping habit expert but I'm willing to share the things I did to fix my sleeping dilemmas. I've tried counting sheeps, I've tried sleeping pills, I've tried almost all the basic things until I actually found out what my problem is. If you can't sleep, don't force yourself.
Some of us force ourselves to sleep. Some of us have regular bed times that we have to follow thus pressuring our mind to keep up with that routine. I just don't believe all this mumbo jumbo stuff we hear and we read about sleeping. Some are true but all human beings are created differently. Caffeine, sugar and other substances contribute to the problem of sleep deprivation. But how much do these chemicals really affect our sleeping habits? Do these things affect our minds that much that we have to make a big deal out of it?
Okay, sure we all have things to do the next morning but what can we really do? We can't sleep, what else can we do? I don't want to share all the unhealthy things that you can do just to sleep but I do want to share helpful tips.
1. Don't force yourself to sleep. For those of you who can't sleep at night, at your own bed time, don't force yourself. Just get out of your bed and do something. Read, walk around but don't watch too much television. Also don't read because you're thinking that it will make your eyes tired. Read because you want to read and eventually, actually, you will get tired. Don't force yourself to get tired. Also (very important) Don't go on online social networking sites at night. Don't. Just don't.
2. Don't take in too much stimulants. If you want to sleep at a particular hour, don't drink soda before that hour. Sometimes it's all about mentality, even if you drink caffeine, you still fall asleep. So there's an exception on this one. Also, don't eat much before sleeping. Drink some milk and relax.
3. Exercise. Believe it or not, if you exercise during the day, it will help you sleep at night. I don't know how the science works and we don't really know how all the magic happens but it helps. Thirty minutes of walking a day during the day will help you fall asleep at night. Don't exercise at night before sleeping, it will only pump you up.
4. Suicide but it can help you. If you're usually up at night until morning, wow that's some big problem. What you can do, and this is not healthy, stay up until your desired time to sleep at night. If you're still up at night time, try to stay up during the day. I know that you'll feel tired, grumpy, disoriented and everything you can think off but stick with it. Go to bed at 9:00pm if that's your desired time and sleep. Or you could even stay up as long as you want but eventually, your body's going to give up and force you to sleep.
5. Follow through if you're already getting in the groove of sleeping. If you've done #4, (although it is unhealthy, but you're not going to die so we all have to deal with this) just do numbers 1-3. Help yourself. If you're not going to help yourself fix your own sleeping habits, who will? I don't like talking to therapists, psychologists, doctors, friends about these things. Deal with it and help yourself.
That's it for now. I just want to share it because I know there are people out there that are all crazy about sleeping problems. It really isn't a big deal. Not at all. Don't force yourself if you can't sleep, that is unhealthy. Many thoughts are jumping in and out of your mind and that's some form of stress. I'm no expert therefore, these are all street advices.
Thanks for reading,

Thanks! I agree with your tips! Especially #2.
how many writers can't sleep....... all the sparks of information come during the night, i think don't they??????????
Yes, I believe that Brenda. All the ideas and inspiration usually come at night. I can't write much during the day! The human mind gets cluttered with other things. Television, bird sounds, car engine, cooking in the kitchen, someone showering, the weather. At night, you'd just sit in one place and let the ideas roll in.
The biggest thing is not to get fixated on the problem, because the more you lie there thinking 'I can't sleep', the more sleep evades you. Dark rooms, exercise, avoiding caffeine, etc are all really helpful suggestions, but as your hub seems to imply, some people can't sleep, just because they don't physically need to, and if that's the case then maybe they should go with the flow!

Excellent tips!
Two more I would add, which often help me:1. Read a fiction novel in the bed until you get really sleepy. It sets your mind off the troubles that keep you awake, and also relaxes your body.
2. Adjust the lights so that they degrade at nighttime. Staring at your LCD screen will make your body think it's still the middle of the day. Darkness will help you get to sleep.
