Rust not only makes your car look ugly but damages its workability as well. You will hardly find any car owner who never had any difficulties with car rust removal. Car rust is a common problem for all especially for those who live in humid regions.

Rust Removal

How rusting begins – What is surface rust?

A small scratch on the surface can initiate rusting. It is worth mentioning that there is nothing known as surface rust. When you see rust particles on the surface of the car, the problem might have been rooted deep already.

Rusting is nothing but a chemical reaction. Iron, oxygen and water with a bit of impurity as catalyst react to form rust. Rust is a series of iron oxides. Rusty items are fragile and weak; they lose their strength and become useless to be used in mechanical purposes.

When iron rusts it expands in volume, as a result the item becomes porous. It’s true that rusting begins on the surface. But once it begins, it takes little time to penetrate deep. What you see from the outside can be the peak of a glacier in reality.

Once you wrap the surface properly, you reduce the risk of rust attack. The paint that is applied on the body of your car is not solely meant for look and exterior. The emulsion is protective in nature. Touch the body of any car – you would feel the greasy and oily nature of the paint. Oil repels water – that’s why most paints are oil based. It keeps the substance away from moisture and thus protects it from rust.

Unfortunately, the protective layer on the surface of your car can peel off. Minor collisions, any mistake during parking, accidents or natural calamities can leave small or large scratches on the surface. And that’s where rusting begins from.

As soon as the surface gets exposed to the elements, iron gets oxidized and rusting begins. Let’s think it this way: when the first molecule of rust forms, it opens a hole through which moisture and oxygen enter and oxidize.

Therefore, even the smallest scratch should be repaired soon otherwise rust would start spreading below the paint. Then it will expand in volume causing rest of the paint peel off. And the entire car would be eaten up quickly.

The only way to avoid this situation is to address the problem timely.

Some tips to avoid rust:

  1. Keep a close look on your car. Inspect it minutely every two or three days.
  2. If you find even a small scratch on the body, repair it. If possible, keep car paint at your home and dab it over the damaged part. Ask your car manufacturer the color code of the paint used in your car and buy the same emulsion for repairing so that it does not look odd.
  3. Keep your car clean. Dust particles on the body of car act as the catalyst when rusting begins. By keeping your car clean you can reduce the rate of rusting.
  4. Take your car to the repairing shop frequently so that the mechanic can inspect the internal parts.
  5. Keep rust removers in your automobile toolkit always.

  6. Wash your car every two or three days. Dry it each time you drive it in rain.
