The Relationship Between Carbs and Fat Loss

Carbohydrates play an important role in fat loss. There are two varieties of carbs – simple and complex. Simple carbs are those found in table sugar, colas and candies. Complex carbs are found in fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Carbs provide energy. Simple carbs give a quick, temporary kick. Energy derived from complex carbs is longer lasting and has nutritional value. Because our bodies burn carbs before fat, and because unburned carbs turn into fat; eating carbs without rigorous exercise can contribute to fat storage and weight gain.

Our bodies store fat as an energy reserve. It is vital to our health. But if we only store fat instead of using it for energy, we continue to accumulate it to unhealthy levels. High carb intake inhibits fat-burning for those with inactive lifestyles. Athletes seek high-carb foods because their bodies demand constant influx of energy. But their level of physical activity enables them to burn both the carbs and fat reserves; which is why they stay naturally fit and lean. Non-athletes need to either limit their carb intake to a level below their ability to burn it off, increase their activity to a level to where fat will be burned, or incorporate some balanced synergy between diet and exercise.

The latter is the healthiest approach as it allows for the intake of complex carbs that provide our bodies with needed nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and also keeps us heart-healthy with exercise.
