Taking Care Of Orchids

Orchids have been popular from the time they were introduced in Victorian times, but a lot of people think you need a lot of experience to adequately take care of orchids. The fact is, nothing could be further from the truth! Some require no more care than any other houseplant and with more than 20,000 species to select from, growing orchids is something anyone should be able to master.

Most people assume that they cannot provide a good environment for orchids due to their need for a humid environment. While it is true that some need tropical weather, others will do well with 40% humidity.

Taking Care Of Orchids:

You will really help your efforts with a decent orchid care reference book. The Orchid Care Expert by Nigel Howell is a great eBook that will tell you everything you are looking for and can be downloaded right away. A good reference will ensure your success and make things a good deal easier.

All plants need water, and orchids are no exception. This is really where a lot of beginners go wrong - they give the plant too much water! Try watering weekly, depending on the time of year. Watering is a balancing act because you don't want to leave standing water, but you don't want the soil to dry out too much between waterings either.

Getting enough light is vital to orchid growth. Orchids do not necessarily need a lot of sun, so be sure to look into what is ideal for your species. A sunny window usually works good but you might consider using artificial lighting as well.

An important part of growing orchids is making sure they have the right amount of humidity. Here is where you need to be deliberate in your plant choice as some need more humidity than others. Since different species require different amounts of humidy, go for one that needs an amount you are prepared to provide.

WIth the right reasearch, you might learn that care of orchids is easy in fact, you might discover that the most challenging part about growing orchids is selecting which species you want to grow!
